This versatile digital camera improves on the previous model by including built-in GPS capabilities as well as a mix of manual and automatic settings, making it a good travel companion. During our tests it took some great still shots in a variety of modes and settings, and it captured good quality 720p video as well.

Ricoh's GXR is a modular digital camera that's sure to make your friends ask you all about it. Paired with the A12, 50mm prime lens unit, the GXR can produce vibrant and very clear photos, but its focusing performance was a let-down. There's a still a way to go before the GXR becomes awesome: it needs a larger lens selection and better focusing performance.

The Samsung NX10 is an interchangeable-lens model that's slightly less bulky than a DSLR, offering a 14.6-megapixel APS-C-size CMOS sensor that's significantly larger than the sensors found in Micro Four-Thirds system cameras from Panasonic and Olympus.

Nikon's Coolpix P90 is perfect if you want a small camera with a massive zoom. It doesn't take excellent photos, but it's quality is good enough for A4 prints and for sharing your pics online.

The Canon PowerShot G11 is a good camera, but it's not without its flaws. We wish it had sturdier buttons and that its zoom control was better. Photos are a little soft, but this camera is still capable of capturing some excellent pictures. It's a good choice for users who want full manual control but dislike the idea of paying over $1000 for a digital SLR kit.

Panasonic's LUMIX DMC-GF1-K is a solidly built compact camera that lets you use different lenses. It's capable of capturing beautifully clear images and it's fast. It does have some issues when focusing in dim lighting, and noise is noticeable at high ISO speeds.

Small, good looking and stocked with manual features, the Ricoh GR Digital III is capable of taking superb shots and is the perfect point and shoot for a professional or enthusiast photographer. It costs a lot, but its f/1.9 prime lens and overall great performance make it a desirable product if you can afford it.

Panasonic's Micro Four Thirds line-up gets its second model in the Lumix DMC-GH1. It's a very good quality camera for taking stills and also does very well when shooting high-definition video. However, at $3299, it's quite expensive so only go for it if you absolutely must have the HD recording capability.

If you don't like the bulkiness of a digital SLR camera, but like the idea of changing lenses to suit your needs, then the Olympus Pen E-P1 has your name on it. It produces good images, it has useful art modes and it's stylish. The only drawbacks are the lack of a built-in optical viewfinder and a flash.

It's a comfortable camera to hold and it has the ability to take some good looking shots — even in dim light.

If you want an advanced compact with a big zoom and if don't plan on making big prints of your photos then the Sony Cyber-shot DSC-HX1 is worth considering. However, you will have to get used to its odd physical characteristics (such as the poor shutter button, narrow width and non-rotating LCD screen).

Olympus’s SP-590UZ does a good job of delivering some of the advantages of a larger SLR camera without an interchangeable lens system. Shots taken with the massive 26x zoom lens are almost always crisp and clear, and it comes equipped with a 12-megapixel sensor.
