With Christmas almost upon us yet again, it's a great time to buy a new tablet. Apple's popular iPad may lead the way, but there's plenty of choice. Whether it's an Android tablet on the market or one of Microsoft's new Windows 8 RT devices, there's never been a wider selection of devices available.

The biggest decision you'll have to make when it comes to buying a tablet is size. The larger-sized, traditional iPad may have kicked off the tablet trend, but smaller tablets are now hotter than ever. Google's Nexus 7 is a prime example: it has proven to be very popular and can be used in a different way that larger tablets. Some might even argue that the Nexus 7 spawned Apple into creating the iPad mini, which is set to be one of the most in-demand tablets on the shelves this Christmas.

You'll then need to choose what platform you prefer. Apple's iOS software that powers the iPad and the iPad mini gives you the widest selection of third-party apps, but Google's Android software is more flexible and may be more convenient to you. Then there's the Windows RT tablets like the superbly constructed Microsoft Surface RT. It offers a refreshing new user interface based around vibrant live tiles and it's designed to be a tablet device for users who don't want to join the Android and iOS camps.
