The best phones powered by Microsoft's Windows Phone platform

Microsoft may be struggling to compete with Apple and Google when it comes to mobile operating systems, but in Windows Phone the company has an elegant, smooth and functional OS that is often under appreciated.

Windows Phones may lack some features compared to rival smartphones, but there is no doubting the usefulness and ease of use of Microsoft's OS.

We round-up the best Windows Phones on the market, from budget options like the Nokia Lumia 620, to powerhouse, flagship models like the HTC Windows Phone 8X and Nokia Lumia 920.

HTC Windows Phone 8X

The Windows Phone 8X by HTC is one of the most attractive smartphones we've reviewed this year. It offers excellent performance thanks to the slick Windows Phone OS and has a great display. However, the 8X is let down by a lack of expandable memory, some odd design ergonomics and the Windows Phone third-party app ecosystem.

The screen was particularly good. It is bright and visible from most angles, however heat is an issue, particularly around the Windows button on the front, and on the back where the battery housing is located.

STYLISTIC Q702

My first impression after unboxing the Q702 is that it is a nice looking unit. Styling is somewhat minimalist but very effective. The tablet part, once detached, has a nice weight, and no buttons or switches are located in awkward or intrusive positions.
