Top rated digital SLR cameras: August 2011

The digital SLR market is dominated by two players: Canon and Nikon. This is reflected in our August top rated list for digital cameras, with Pentax being the only other vendor getting a look in. We haven't included any Sony cameras in the list as we are yet to review any of the latest models, nor did we include the Olympus E-5, because we didn't rate it highly enough.
We haven't included Micro Four Thirds cameras or other types of mirror-less cameras in this list because they are not quite the same as a digital SLR -- we have a separate list for those cameras.

The Nikon D7000 is an excellent digital SLR camera for photography enthusiasts. There are two small flaws which stop it being perfect, but if you can work around these it is one of the most competent digital SLRs we've tested.

- Excellent image quality (including at high ISOs), excellent quality 1080p video mode, plenty of professional-level features
- Cons:
- No histogram, exposure indicator or aperture adjustment during live view mode, some shooting controls are not laid out in an intuitive fashion
