Best big screen GPS units

We round up the best 5in sat navs from brands including TomTom, Garmin, Navman and Uniden

Most portable GPS units have 3.5in or 4.3in screens, but displays of up to 5in are now available in sat nav devices for very reasonable prices.

Although GPS units are designed to be heard rather than viewed, a large screen has plenty of benefits, most notably a clearer, more spacious map screen and more comfortable interaction when entering an address or selecting a route.

The top three GPS brands in Australia — TomTom, Garmin and Navman — all have 5in sat navs on the market, while Uniden's TRAX 5000 is a great example of a well-designed large screen GPS unit for a very competitive price. Check out our guide to the best 5in GPS units on the market. Keep in mind that you can more often than not pick these up for well under the listed RRP — it pays to shop around!

TomTom XXL 540

TomTom's XXL 540 GPS unit takes the XL 340 and adds an extra-large display, but the navigation experience is similar. Unless you're hell bent on getting a GPS with a big screen, we think most users will be better off saving some money and opting for the XL 340 instead.
