At certain times the printer prints giberish, of which is extremely annoying as some copies are very important.
Not sure if I will keep the machine

You make no mention of the fact that these printers have printheads as well as ink cartridges as consumables!! These printheads last no more than 18 months are a $100 each to replace!! After spending $300-$400 on the printer, then replace two of these just out of warranty and you might as well buy a new printer!! Ridiculous!!

Harvey Norman had it priced at 499, but officeworks had it for 350. Harvey Norman matched that price without much haggling

Pricing on the 8600 series depends on the model. The regular model is under $200, the Plus usually sells for $299 but I bought one today at MicroCenter for $229!, and the Premium sells for $399. Since the only difference between the Plus and the Premium is the 2nd paper tray, AND since one can buy that tray as an option (Buy.com has it for under $60), it makes sense to buy the Plus and add the optional 2nd tray separately (if one needs 2 trays). The only reason I didn't give a full 5 stars is that I haven't yet tested photo quality, so I'm not sure of those capabilities.

Is this printer compatible with the PHOTOSMART program of years past? Is the PHOTOSMART program compatible with Win 7? Photosmart and Esseintials are the best Photo imagining tools for our needs. How do we get this program back?
I absolutely hate Win 7! Too much reading...nothing is recognizable...everything is out of place...you have to go through too many lists and menus to do anything. Learning curve is way too high. Newer is not better! They have lost the simplicity of Win 95 and XP and replaced it with a nightmare of high tech garbage. The new printer/FAX/scanner/copier works fine except for the picture program (which sucks). I want my old printer and photosmart program back!
