Once chunky and ugly devices that most consumers wouldn’t be caught dead wearing, Bluetooth headsets have evolved over the past year into wearable fashion items that can be quite discreet. Tiny units, like Jabra’s BT2050, are welcome additions to the market.

The BT2050 is a simple and plain looking product, with its main appeal being its miniscule size. The unit is one of the smallest Bluetooth headsets currently available. Despite the size, it feels reasonably well built thanks to matte black plastic casing, gloss black edging and an attractive silver centre that encompasses talk and volume buttons.

Operation of this unit, like most, is quite simple. The BT2050 features just four buttons: an answer/end call key, volume up and down buttons and a power key. The power key is quite small and requires a deep press of your fingertip, but the rest of the controls are large and effortless to operate. Comfort is excellent and Jabra includes two optional ear hooks for further stability should you require it. We were comfortable using it without the ear hooks, with the ear bud sitting firmly in our ear for prolonged periods.

Pairing the BT2050 is straightforward. Simply hold down the power button until the small, white LED displays a solid light to put the unit in pairing mode. Search for the unit using the Bluetooth menu of your mobile phone and enter the default passcode of 0000. Once first time pairing is achieved, the BT2050 will automatically pair with your phone each time you switch it on.

Performance is far from outstanding. Outgoing sound is excellent, with our callers rarely complaining of any interference or echo. Volume was deemed acceptable and the audio was loud and clear for most of our calls. Unfortunately, incoming audio is poorer in comparison. We struggled to hear our caller at various times, particularly when outside and faced with a slight wind. The BT2050 performs better indoors, but still lacks the quality of many other headsets on the market.

In addition to calling, the BT2050 also allows you to activate voice dialling (provided this feature is supported by your handset), redial the last number called and reject incoming calls. The unit is charged via an included AC adapter utilising a standard micro-USB connection.
