Well where to start, must not listen to sale's pitch from Telstra!! We got our first Ts**t last year(mid year) less than a month later it died unresponsive remote did all the bulls**t after many phone calls, sent it back, got a new one and was charged $159.00 for a replacement,It has taken 5 months to sort out the billing issue which resulted in getting phone disconnected!Suddenly we lost most of the channels, we can only watch 7,7mate, Abc,Sbs,and last night the Ts**t died again, checked the antenna connection and we get all channels by disconnecting the the Ts**t. I don't think this was well thought out at all as it very rarely works as it should, can't wait to ring so I can not understand the person I will be speaking to in Dubai....WTF Telstra

    Doesn't work as sold!

This thing is a scam. Every time we use it for something quite small such as a movie or the footy our usage spikes! It is slow, chews through bandwith and the content is not that great. Don't waste your money!

    Telstra pricing

    T-Box PVR

Don't waste your money. Because the TV networks do not run their programs to schedule and despite being connect to the internet, the T-Box does not recognise the live program times. So the TV recording function is inadequate, you will never record the full program. The movies is a rort, high prices for a limited library. Quicflix is cheaper and offers and huge library. We paid a small fee for the unit in store and are now also charged a monthly fee.

recording cut short and missing end of shows

I record but it doesn't have a time select function, thus, I miss the end of my shows ie. starts at 7pm and finishes at 7.30pm. Most shows start at 7.05pm and finish at 7.35-7.40pm! Crazy!

We have had a T Box for some months and have had no problems with it at all. We have rented quite a number of movies and have found they downloaded very quickly and we could not be more pleased. We have ADSL2+ amd have not experienced any problems with losing ends of movies etc as mentioned by others. All in all very happy with our T Box

Nothing is good about this. It's not even a sleek design.

Terrible TBox. Had it one week and took it back. Nothing on this thing is appealing. If you have a state of the art HD telly its shows up as running mostly in 720 HD, not 1080. There is NO 5.1 surround sound, just stereo. It's slow to use and expensive to rent movies. (you can buy most of the movies for little more that $6) so why bother renting them. Just a total con job from Telstra.

    The whole thing

Regularly freezes, requires re-boots constantly and lags. Often, it won't send sound to the amp. There is nothing positive to say about this product. It's as if Telstra found them on special from a dodgy Chinese manufacturer and decided their customers are too stupid to know better. This product comes with the usual Telstra broken promises. We have had the remote changed three times and the box three times. Finally they agreed the other day to take it back and refund it. Hooray!

    Finicky Control

The functions that the TBox performs overall are good. It would be a good product if Telsta bothered to fix the problems. The main problem I've got is the finicky control. It does not always register when you press a button, then it lags, then it spins through whatever you are scrolling. It's so-ooooo frustrating. For example, you click fast-forward to 2x, then to 5x, then to 10x but it stays on 5x, so you click again, and so on, then suddenly, it jumps to 600x. It really makes the product unusable. I don't mind the small control, but I wish the stupid thing would work properly.

Just thought I'd drop this bit of info in as well: I bought both the T-box and T-hub because my "bundle" required me to have one or the other: OR SO I WAS LED TO BELIEVE. I doubt they've changed their approach to moving these monstrous boxes, so to let you know:

IF YOU ARE CONTRACTED TO A BUNDLE SEEMING TO INCLUDE A TBOX OR THUB, YOU ARE NOT ACTUALLY REQUIRED TO PURCHASE THE THUB OR TBOX.

A Telstra employee from the highlevel complaints department let me know. I had been lied to again, and again, and again when I asked the Fillipino consultant, however after being transferred back to Australia (after 30 minutes) I was told the truth. Telstra is trying to move the boxes by making them appear to be bound to their bundles. They are not. If you are stuck in a contract with Telstra and don't want the Tbox or Thub simply call them and return it. If, like me, you find this corporate behaviour offensive, demand the entirety of your money back, from the $35 down payment through every payment made: if you were led to believe that the T-whatevers were integral to the contract you signed, you were decieved by a sales representative... Demand a full refund.

Seriously, read these reviews and DO NOT BUY A TBOX (or T-Hub for that matter.)

Don't even think that the $35 + $11/mnth is a safe way to test this absolute failure of a device: I currently have two t-box's (plus two t-hubs, and three modems) ALL OF WHICH TELSTRA CHARGE ME FOR!!! I've been trying to return the majority of these items for months now, and the charges just keep turning up on my bill, unlike the return satchels which never turn up.

On that, I was trying to return both t-boxes: one was faulty (like so many Telstra products), the other one was just as useless as a t-box. TV tuner can't tune in to our "weak" signal out here (the TV has no trouble), Telstra IPTV is an absolute joke when compared to MeTV and Fetch.

Overall happy with the T-Box except when playing downloaded movies the movie will freeze approx every 20 minuutes or so for a few seconds then goes into fast forward to catch up (all by itself) This is most annoying and second rate especially scince you are paying good money to hire the movie. The Telstra T-Box is complete rubbish. Had it for 12 months. Constantly had to perform hard resets. Movies never play perfectly. Vision and Sound constantly gets out of sync. Constantly reboots for no reason. Just look at it ... its a cheap piece of plastic crap with an even cheaper remote control.
Telstra customer service is appalling. Off shore telephonists speaking broken English pretend to type notes on your account when you make a complaint but when you call back next day THE NOTES DON'T EXIST.
We are returning out T-box and our T-Hub and our iPhones and going back to Optus.

Have had nothing but trouble since we got it 5 months ago, have rung telstra help almost everytime we use it..and get people with strong accents so we have no idea what they're saying. Movies freeze and have to re-boot the box continually. Feel so ripped and want to send it back..didn't work with adsl so had to go wireless, was not told that till after we got it. Another unwarranted expense but bit the bullet.

I've had a T-Box for about 1 month and I can say that it is a fantastic piece of equipment. It works perfectly, the interface is simple and easy to use. I really don't understand what everyone is complaining about. It is a great all round device and I can highly recommend it.

You are lied to just to keep you feeling that perhaps one day things will be good. It is the biggest con trick in the book. Banks use it, polititions use it. A promise of something good, eventually. They keep you on a string until you give up and leave, but hey, there will be another sucker along soon. Wake up and see the lies.....virginmobile broadband. Optus. Telstra. Vodaphone. They all master the art of sly sales with a dose of lies. Well done a aust...................

    Stupid child sized wireless remote

I've had a T-Box for 6months now and I am very pleased with it's performance. I do however also have a Bigpond ADSL2 WiFi system to work with it. It has had a few freeze ups but they have been cured by rebooting. (Complete power down for a minute or two).
I am dissapointed with the support User manual inso far as that I have recently looked into using the T-Box as a total home entertainment unit capable of connecting to a home PC network and playing video files from ahome video library storage device. My own DVD library is burgeoning and is becoming difficult to store.I am aware that these functions are possible from YouTube help videos but they do not go into the actual accessing of files or even how they are displayed. Also there is no mention of what the USB connection on the front panel is capable of or again how to access it on the menus.
One thing I did accidently come across on the T-Box help pages (only a day or so ago) was that you can get rid of the child sized useless remote controller and program in a Logitech Harmony multi remote.
Telstra definitely need to upgrade their T-Box User Manual to include the use of a total media centre.

dinky remote control, lags, freezes constantly

This product is an absolute piece of rubbish. The remote control does not work properly. At first I thought it was the battery but after paying for a new expensive battery, it still doesn't work. When the remote does work, it skips channels in the preview mode. Also, when attempting to fast-forward through recorded programs, it often sticks and scans at 600x to the end of the program which is incredibly frustrating. If you record a series, it often stores the episodes out of sequence and they can be hard to flick through with the useless remote control. The choice of movies in the last few months has improved slightly but it's still not very good. I would not recommend this product to anybody. It is frustrating. Cheap and nasty are words that come to mind.

Big Pond movie downloads have NO 5.1 Surround. You can happily get 5.1 from some free to air transmissions through the T-Box - but it is officially confirmed that NONE of the movie downloads have surround. They are all stereo. In comparison, most Apple TV movies have surround... I'll be dusting off my local DVD shop rental card ! What;s the point of watching a movie in stereo ?

    Telstra T-Box

Received the T-Box last week and already called help line three times. First it was the registration. Then it got stuck on foxtel advert channel and now the remote stops working after five minutes. Absolute rubbish. And they said extra channels. What if I am over 40 and not interested in Fiooty or Rugby?
Then there is the set up of the unit. the programmer should be sacked. Why can';t you arrange your channels? I like channel 9, Go and Gem in that order which is not possible. Changing of channels are also a hastle, it just takes too long to load and the info flag stays on too long.
And why is the reset botton right under the unit? I set my T-Box in my entertainment unit and to rest the unit I have to pull the whole thing out so I can reach underneath.

And who's idea was it to only mak Youtube available? Why not the whole internet? Wouldn't that had a better potential to make money for Telstra?

My forty dollar generic HD settop box with recording capability works a hunderd times better.

Wake up Telstra. One of the biggest companies in this country with all necessary resources at you desposal and this is what you are marketing?

    Quality Problems

The telemarketer sold us this product when we switched to bigpond internet five months ago. Since that time the TBOX has malfunctioned twice and had to be sent back to Telstra for repairs. The first mode of malfunction was the unit kept locking up and rebooting every two minutes. We sent the unit back and got a replacement. The second malfunction ( two weeks later) was that the unit no longer responded to the remote control.

The TBOX also requires an active internet connection to be able to schedule TV program recordings. We also have a digital TV which obtains the TV program guide over the air and does not require an internet connection to do this.

The primary reason for purchasing the tbox was to record tv shows, but the unit is unable to do this without an internet connection.

    Movies dark images pixelate

I've had my T-box for two weeks and can say it is a great PVR. The interface and graphics make it simple to navigate and find what you need. The Big Pond movie download service beats going to the video shop then paying late fees but I found dark scenes hard to watch due to pixelation - must not be DVD quality as advertised. The recording function is so simple compared to other PVR's I've tried and owned. If you worry about not recording the end of a show simply go into Options and choose for every recording to finish a few minutes later than the setting you've chosen - simple (works with start times as well). My download speed varies from 5mps to 7mps so I'm in a slow area but the T-box operates just fine, no pauses at all. I researched this PVR thoroughly and held back buying one due to the bad reviews but now realise they are in the minority. This is a great machine.

I am amazed to see all the negative comments on the TBox. We had one installed with the FIOS (NBN) Internet, and it's been nothing but a dream, running on a large 1080p TV, and surround sound system all through HDMI. I'm not a Telstra fanboi (is anyone?) But this is a great device, the ability to watch internet TV from providers other than just Telstra would have drawn a 5 star rating from me!

    telstra TBOX

The testra T-box has been nothing but trouble from get go. As the other reviewers have made very clear this product is A grade crap. Number one if you don't turn the T-box off a certain way it gets rid of all sound on your televition so you need to re set and turn it off at the mains over and over until it magically decides to work again. I just deleted recorded shows and my T-box has gone into meltdown my picture and sound has gone. Changing the channels is incredibly frustrating and takes so long that you miss the first half of the show and we've recently come to discover that when you try and record a tv show which i though was a major perk to this deal it misses about the last ten minutes of any program even though i have all my download space left. Get your act together telstra for once and make a product that actually works, we're paying enough for your quality rubbish after all.

Small thin remote control feels like it will break in two at the slightest pressure

It's truly amazing that all those who are deriding the product also lack basic spelling skills, which leads me to believe that did not read or comprehend the instructions that came with the product that clearly state keep it away from other electronic appliances and do not place it on any other operating electronic device. Maybe this is because doing so will cause interference with both the product and reception and most electronic products emit copious amounts of heat which in turn may affect the circuitry within the box which itself is light-weight.
Now getting back to basics. The T-Box is basically a marketing tool by Telstra to access its streaming content. If you want a dedicated PVR then get a dedicated PVR (most of which come from the same companies that produce the components for the T-Box). If you want machine that provides you a gateway for cable programming get a Foxtel IQ or TiVo.
But if you want a nice little machine that delivers exactly what it says it will deliver then T-Box is an excellent add-on to the plethera of electronic recording and streaming devices out there in the market. Later this year it will even provide Foxtel content (similar to that on offer on the XBox) but unmetered (which XBox currently does not offer, so you don't use up the available download on your internet plan.
Love the machine for what it delivers. If you have problems with it then read the instructions before you connect it.

  • Pros
Esay to use, records our favorite shows automatically, great extra AFL coverage
  • Cons
takes 5 seconds to turn on, otherwise great

We got ours two months ago, and it was easy to set up, and has been easy to use. Not sure if we have a new model or something, but it's really a good addition. Just press a button and our favorite TV series are recorded, so we can watch them when / if we have time. Nice to have extra sports content, and TV guide.

  • Pros
    Not much
  • Cons
    poorly designed

It's the only dual HD tuner PVR on the market that I know of that will only let you record one channel at a time. There are no RCA inputs on the box, so you can't hook up an external device like an iPod to play music through it.
The USB will only support FAT32 file system. Large external hard drives are not easily formatted (without external tools). The average user will have trouble with this. The file system limitations also means that there can be no single file greater than 4GB.
Export function will export in a 'ts' file format, which seems to be encrypted. Unable to playback exported recordings on anything other than a TBox.
The TBox does not support other media types (ie: mpeg, avi, etc), you can only playback the 'ts' files that were exported.
All in all, the box has great potential, but in it's current format is useless, and an extremely poorly designed product.
Do not buy in it's current format.

  • Pros
    Interface
  • Cons
    The remote

The remote is very small and feels tacky for something to be used all the time, aside from that the interface is incredibly attractive and the features are great! From the simple ones like showing your suburb and weather to playing games on the new applications add-on. Tbox will also have an option for foxtel too. the bigpond channels are great as well especially the Bigpond Music Channel. Occasionally it freezes but hey for the price with all it's features, technology has been renown to fault, but you have to look at the positives too. The movies started off VERY poor..with the new releases all B grade, but now it has movies like Inception, Iron Man 2, The Blind Side and many more! Trial it at your telstra shop because there's no point in getting it if the interface and layout that is used all the time bugs you. ALSO it come with a free HDMI cable, which was strange because usually you have to buy one separately????

  • Pros
Ease of Setup. Ease of Recording. Wireless is excellent and speedy.
  • Cons
Would prefer to be able to access the sub-titles on/off via a single button, rather than through the menu system

Bought this to replace a 3 year old Philips PVR which was driving me crazy with its foibles.
The T-Box has made me a "happy camper" once again.
I'm 70 and setting it up was a snap, using it is a breeze.

  • Pros
it's just one big scam !
  • Cons
do you want a list ?

This product is a rip off.
Nothing works, not the recording, not the remote, I can receive the big pond channels, the movies that they offer ar low class horror and B movies what a scam !!!
Remote keeps on unpairing, freezes all the time, sound suddenly gone, you can't depend on the programming you lose parts of the program unless you modify the recording each time. Expensive piece of equiptment that doesn't work.

NRL of $10 a month, good value
  • Cons
    T-Box

Well cannot agree more, what a crap piece of "technology". I purchased the t-box because of it's wi-fi capability, it cannot connect with a signal strength below 50%. I have a playstation inside the cupboard the t-box sits on, it connects OK. Time to call Telstra to take it back.

Other reviews have said it all and I have experienced most of the complaints noted. After 3 months I am ready to throw the thing out - unfortunately I made the mistake of paying for it up-front.

have to agree with the others...one thing i do think interesting is the amount of people who have had to get a replacement...i also needed to get a new Tbox within the first few weeks...not happy with program recording as it ends to soon missing bits but you do have a manual record control function. i think it is very clumsy and the lock in period makes it such a dissapointment. it also has that stupid timed switch off function and seems to have a mind of its own and turns off constantly. should have tested the TiVo first i think.

In short lets just rename it the S**T BOX. It freezes, its slow, it gets stuck on the one channel (usually a crap one) and it turns itself on and off when it feels like it. You'll get more enjoyment staring at a blank wall than dealing with this lemon. Too bad the rating system doesn't go into the negatives. Not Happy Jan.
