live should be for life

The live update should be for the life of the unit because otherwise it is only Live if you want to pay, and if you dont then its a DEAD 820

Battery once fully charged would be better if it lasted longer

Setting Up

I had read the scathing reviews re the "no GPS after update" problem on the 820 but really wanted the live traffic function so decided to give it a go.

It did take a few tries and some time outside for the unit to lock on to the satellites the first time, but I followed the directions from TomTom and some tips from the forums and it sorted itself out. Since then I've been very happy with it.

Live traffic works well. It's taken me handily around traffic jams when there's a better alternative. I like the voice control (saves lots of tapping), the screen of the 820 is plenty big enough for me. Bluetooth seemed to overload it though so I don't use that option as my car has Bluetooth anyway.

Bottom line, not perfect but quite good, I'm happy with it. If it weren't for the hassle of setting it up I'd give it 5 stars.

Since the purpose of the GPS is to assist you to navigate where you are going, the connection to the satelite within a relatively quick timeframe from turning the unit on is necessary. On purchase, I was advised that to fix a known bug, I must load up the new software update before I tried to use the device. I followed the stores and TomTom website instructions successfully (according to the software queues on my device and online). The device worked for my first trip home and then for next 5 days it stopped working, in as much as it was unable to locate a satelite signal from anywhere across two states. Even after reseting to factory settings and starting whole process again, the device is still unable to locate a satelite signal. My opinion - most expensive lemon I've purchased for a long time. It is on its way back to the store!

getting started via webb

i have many company cars and find tomtom the best for our needs, the go 730 is my choice, only because i have trouble with the start up webb procedure, but after a computer tech got me going i found the go 820 brilliant.

Pros
Clairity of instructions on live 820
Cons
Backing up the Tom Tom 820 live
• • •

I have used several previous verions of the Tom Tom and have found them easy to use. Firstly I had to return a faulty unit, would not connect to Satellite then could not opperate it from my PC (Back-Up etc) as the programme recommended was not compatable with my operating platform (Windows 7 Professional). The battery life however is a lot better than my 730 which was around 30 seconds on a good day.
