Disney Interactive Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End

Pros

  • A good distillation of the Pirates movies. Sweet and simple gameplay.

Cons

  • Unless you're a diehard fan of the movies, this one probably won't float your boat.

Bottom Line

At World's End delivers exactly what you'd expect from a movie licensed game: It's deep enough and features enough referential material to draw in the diehard fans of the source material but it isn't innovative or interesting enough to stand alone in the action genre. However, if you come in with lowered expectations, you just might have fun with it.

Hidden Treasure

To be fair there are a few good things about World's End. For one, the game looks fantastic. The character models are spot on to their movie counterparts and the environments have amazing variety and personality. The combat portion is also interesting, with a style that's reminiscent of the Prince of Persia series. It is a little dumbed down--many enemies can be beaten with a couple of sword swings--but its serviceable enough, as is the platforming which comes down to following the onscreen instructions and pressing the corresponding buttons at the right time.

Characters from the movies will join you in on the fun every now and again, and you have the ability to switch between various characters on the fly, which is one of the best features of the game.

What Happened To The Rum?

That said, World's End isn't a great game by any stretch. Titles like God of War and Prince of Persia have elevated the bar for the cinematic action game far higher than a simplistic game like this one can hope to reach and the hardcore gamer will find his thirst for a visceral action experience unquenched. To its credit, the game is engaging and will probably be a sure thing for diehard fans of the movie, but it certainly won't draw in non-fans.

Let us put it this way: if you're still walking around doing your Captain Jack Sparrow impression, then you're going to want to come aboard this one. But if you're not obsessed with Johnny Depp's shenanigans, you should probably check out the movie before you plunk down any doubloons.

The Fujitsu LifeBook UH574 allowed for great mobility without being obnoxiously heavy or clunky. Its twelve hours of battery life did not disappoint.

STYLISTIC Q702

The screen was particularly good. It is bright and visible from most angles, however heat is an issue, particularly around the Windows button on the front, and on the back where the battery housing is located.

STYLISTIC Q702

My first impression after unboxing the Q702 is that it is a nice looking unit. Styling is somewhat minimalist but very effective. The tablet part, once detached, has a nice weight, and no buttons or switches are located in awkward or intrusive positions.
