Bottom Line

The SuperTooth M1 is reasonably sounding considering its size, and the built in-subwoofer and rechargeable battery make it appealing for music buffs.

A powerful portable speaker system whose manufacturer says it provides "high quality audio", the SuperTooth M1 has the ability to play music files via the Bluetooth A2DP profile, as well as connect any device with a standard 3.5mm headphone jack.

The key feature of the M1 besides Bluetooth connectivity is the 28 Watt RMS rating (12 Watt subwoofer and 2 x 8 Watt speakers), making it one of the more powerful portable speaker systems on the market. We were very impressed with its volume: the M1 definitely has enough punch to fill a large room with sound. Although it does slightly distort at the highest volume level, this didn't have as much of an impact as many other speaker systems we've reviewed.

In terms of sound quality, the M1 is solid, but not outstanding. We are always weary of these compact speaker systems; it is difficult to produce quality sound from a device that is so compact. Nonetheless, the M1 does a relatively good job, with crisp and clear audio for most part.

Of course, using the provided line-in cable to plug a device directly into the unit provides better sound quality than streaming over Bluetooth, but both methods produce decent, though not noteworthy, sound. When connected via Bluetooth, the M1 does produce a somewhat annoying hissing sound in the background, but this is a common problem with Bluetooth sound systems and not just an issue with the M1.

Perhaps the best aspect of the M1 is its ability to produce punchy bass levels for such a compact system. A bass boost button on the front of the unit can turn this on and off, but we were disappointed that no other basic sound settings, such as treble, can be altered.

The M1 works with any device that has a standard 3.5mm headphone jack, or any device that has the A2DP Bluetooth profile for streaming wireless music. Connecting a Bluetooth device is a simple and easy process — simply put the unit in pairing mode by holding the power button for five seconds, then pair the M1 with your Bluetooth device. If your phone or music player supports the AVRCP remote control profile you can use the playback controls on the front of the unit to control your music. These include play/pause and previous/next buttons as well as a volume knob.

The design of the M1is quite plain, but the silver edging adds a touch of class. The small LED displays Bluetooth status. The M1's rear features an audio line in jack and a DC power input. Perhaps one of the best features of the M1 is its rechargeable battery, making it a true wireless device. BlueAnt claims it has up to 10 hours battery life off a full charge, though this is if the unit is set at "medium" volume. At full volume, a charge should provide up to four hours of playback. The M1 is charged via the included AC adapter.

Ultimately, I think the Windows 10 environment is excellent for me as it caters for so many different uses. The inclusion of the Xbox app is also great for when you need some downtime too!

For me, the Xbox Play Anywhere is a great new feature as it allows you to play your current Xbox games with higher resolutions and better graphics without forking out extra cash for another copy. Although available titles are still scarce, but I’m sure it will grow in time.
