The Sanyo Xacti VPC-C1 is a combination digital camcorder and digital still camera that takes reasonable still images and surprisingly good quality video.

The VPC-CA8(EXBK) is a minor upgrade of Sanyo's previous waterproof model, the VPC-CA65 (EXW). Despite some improvements to image quality (particularly when it comes to still pictures), its limited underwater functionality remains unchanged.

The Xacti VPC-C5 is miles better than Sanyo's previous efforts and we won't be surprised when other manufacturers emulate the camera/camcorder hybrid formula. But remember, if you want a straightforward digicam, you'll find better elsewhere.

The world's smallest high definition camcorder is great for still pictures and range of features but less so for the quality of its video.

While the splash-proof case and tiny design of the Xacti VPC-CA6 will appeal to some, those after good quality video and stills with an easy to operate control setup should look elsewhere.

As the first DVD-based high definition camcorder the UX1 has good quality video, but misses out on practicality.

The HDR-HC5E is a quality product, but it comes at a price. Despite a few flaws with colours, this camera performs very well in comparison to most camcorders. For those who can afford it, it's a great unit.

The Sony DCR-SR100 is one of the first hard disk based camcorders on the market, and demonstrates why the technology is here to stay.
