If you want a camera with a powerful zoom, a long focal length, and extensive controls, but an SLR is too big or too expensive for you, the Coolpix 8800 makes an excellent choice. Be prepared to invest some time in mastering the controls, however.

The 50D is an absolutely fantastic mid-level SLR. It offers the highest resolution in its price range and packs in a bevy of features, including Live View, a speedy burst mode and ultra-high ISO sensitivities, making this a winner for any professional or enthusiastic amateur.

The DSCV3's main selling points are its quick shutter and its comparatively simple menu system, but some competing cameras take better shots.

The Minolta 7D offers a profusion of manual controls and an innovative anti-shake feature, but its image quality was sub-par.

For at least a little while it appears the Canon 40D is king of the hill. There is a lot to like about the Pentax K20D. It produces some of the crispest, sharpest pictures of any camera in its class. It also has a stack of features, including live view and sensor-based stabilisation. Some users will want a faster burst mode or better live view implementation. Nonetheless, this is a great option for enthusiasts.

Professional build quality, a fast 7X optical zoom and support for both Memory Stick Pro and CompactFlash II cards place the DSC F828 squarely in the semi-professional category.

The Nikon D70 is feature-packed and takes superb photos. If you already have Nikon-compatible lenses the D70 is a great way to get into high-end digital.
