This revolutionary little machine is a great choice for kids at school, or travellers looking for a basic unit to update their blog, check e-mails or write their travel diary with. We wouldn't recommend it as much to the elderly, simply due to the keyboard and screen size, but it is simple to use and does the job well.

For its size and price this Acer is a great purchase. It has a strong selection of connectivity options crammed into a small package and good battery life as well.

It's small, affordable and easy to use. Business users will appreciate the fast networking options and the ExpressCard slot. Travellers and students will love its large hard drive capacity and the fact that it's compact but still easy to use.

It's very difficult to criticise the Lenovo ThinkPad X301 without sounding like a nitpicker. This is a fantastic and well-engineered notebook that has plenty of features and looks very attractive. The only substantial issues are the high price tag, the lower than average battery life and the problematic latch.

Physically, it's the same as the Linux version, and it has less storage space, but it does feel a little faster and it's much better suited to playing videos.

For its sub-$700 asking price, you can't go wrong with the MSI Wind. It was responsive in our tests, and has plenty of storage and a large screen. Most importantly, its battery lasts a long time. This ultraportable is also quite comfortable to use.

The 1000H is the best Eee PC yet. It's got a larger screen and a larger keyboard than its predecessors, it's faster and it's also got a much larger storage capacity. It's perfect for on-the-go types who want something light and functional to work on.

The Flybook VM's lifting screen is very useful and the unit is comfortable to use overall. It has enough power for typical office applications and even Photoshop, and its screen produced rich colours. We wish it had at least one more USB port and an SD card reader. Apart from that, we think this is a great choice for anyone after a comfortable ultraportable unit.

The Fujitsu Lifebook U1010 3.5G is a great example of the increasingly popular ultra mobile PCs. It's easily held and is comfortable to use while also being extremely portable. If the size and weight weren't enough to get you excited then the addition of 3.5G HSDPA speeds of up to 7.2Mbps should help.

The 901 is better than the 900, thanks to its faster CPU and networking features, but it's still small and will take some time getting used to. Nevertheless, the more you use it, the more you fall in love with it. It's great for taking it on the road with you, for working with office applications, and also watching videos.

It has been out for a while now, but the original Eee PC is still great value and one of the best super-portable laptops on the market.

The S10 is a refined netbook that possesses good looks and solid construction. It's easy to use and perfect for travellers and students who don't want to cart around more than 1.4kg (including the power adapter).
