If you are in the market for a mid-range Plasma television with good all round performance, the Q9 series from Samsung is definitely worth a look.

Another great plasma from Panasonic. The TH-42PZ800A produces a great picture with some of the best blacks we've seen; it only suffers from a few niggling issues.

The Sanyo PDP-42XS1 is not the best plasma on the market and considering the fact that it is standard definition and has image flaws, it is not our first choice.

The Panasonic TH-42PX600A performed brilliantly in standard definition and when connected to a PC. High definition content and HDTV also looks quite good on the unit, but not as good as the other image modes. If you own a media centre PC or want your DVD collection to look great, this is definitely worth consideration.

The 42PD960DTA is a good all round mid-range television but has its problems across all modes and is far from brilliant.

The Panasonic TH-50PX70A is an excellent all-round high-end Plasma panel that performs well across standard and high definition resolutions.

If you have the will power to overlook quite a few visual aberrations, then this display might do the job.

The Hitachi 50PDP9800TA is a mid-range big-screen TV. It was excellent in our high definition tests and produced reasonable results in our standard definition tests.

An excellent high-definition panel, the Samsung PS-50P91FD is slightly let down by its performance in other areas.

The LG 50PY3DF's many strengths and features, including good speakers and a reasonable price, may help it find it a place on the TV stands of some homes despite its middle-of-the-road performance.
