Should DMB television broadcasts come to Australia any time soon, gadgets such as the Cowon iAudio D2 DMB could be pretty hot stuff. As it is, the less than impressive screen and lack of a decent aerial count against the Cowon iAudio D2 DMB.

If you can handle having no voice recorder or radio and are dissatisfied with the sound quality of other portable media players, then the Sony NWZ-A815 is a great choice.

A decent showing from Creative, but the Creative Zen 4GB suffers from comparison with Apple's ultra-desirable iPod nano. Video playback and the SD Card slot are plus points, however.

The Archos is attractive, good value for money and well-designed, with an intuitive layout and high-quality screen. Charging is a hassle, however.

While it may cost a pretty penny, the iPod touch is a brilliant portable media player. The touch screen operates fluidly, and wireless connectivity adds a whole new level of options and features.

Sony's decision to discard their proprietary ATRAC format and clunky SonicStage software on the NWZ-S616F is a blessing. An excellent interface, good battery life and video playback make this a solid choice if you are after a compact music player.

The iPod classic is relatively plain compared to the nano and touch, and so it may struggle to find a position in the market. However, the massive storage capacity should be enough to attract anyone who has found that the touch's flash memory just isn't enough.

Despite its shape and size changing dramatically, the new iPod nano still manages to be the best designed player on the market. Under the hood lies an excellent music player, and a capable video player representing great value at this price.

If you're after a portable media player with all the bells and whistles, Creative's Zen Vision W is a brilliant choice.

The Apacer Audio Steno AU840 isn't the worst media player we have ever reviewed, but it certainly doesn't compare with the higher end units on the market.

The FM37 is a brilliant portable media player which brings touch screen functionality properly into the media player space. While the screen itself is quite sensitive and takes some getting used to, it is quite intuitive and the rest of the features are very well implemented.

The NW-805 comes with a hefty price tag, but if you can overlook the reliance on SonicStage, this is a fine portable media player with an excellent design and good sound quality.
