The Pearl Flip is RIM’s first non-candybar BlackBerry handset and the results are fair but not outstanding. Some consumers will appreciate the Flip design, but the lack of 3G connectivity is a real let-down.

The Omnia is Samsung’s attempt at pushing Windows Mobile as far into the background as possible, but it’s certainly not perfect. With more tweaking to the TouchWIZ interface and a bit more speed, this could potentially knock the iPhone off its perch. As it stands though, it's an admirable handset without being outstanding.

The i780 improves the usability of an otherwise regular Windows Mobile 6 device by offering a redesigned home screen and an optical joystick.

The Centro is definitely an interesting concept, and it represents a new target market for Palm. It's not perfect, but on the whole this is a nifty device that is tailored well to its demographic.

The Ultimate 9502 is one of the first HSUPA-capable phones to hit the market in Australia. Although it's feature packed and the Custom and Secure i-Q portals are a nice touch, you'll need to consider whether its bulky form factor is right for you.

The Touch Cruise may not be the best looking smartphone on the market, but it has an excellent features list, headed by built-in GPS, Wi-Fi and HTC's TouchFLO interface.

As a PDA, the i-mate Ultimate 8150 is a reasonable choice. As business tool it's quite a feature-packed device with some additional functionality provided by i-mate's I-Q feature.

There have been some good improvements to the Mio A702 over its predecessor, the A701, and while the navigation wasn't overly effective, it is a hybrid device and can't be expected to do everything perfectly.

The Treo 500v aims to appeal to a broad audience thanks to its user-friendly menu system, a sleek design and a range of multimedia features. It's not perfect, but is definitely a welcomed entry into the market.

The P1i is packed to the brim with features, and its only real downside is the unconventional keyboard, as well as an interface that will take some time to grasp. If you can get your head around each of them you're left with an excellent device on the whole.

The MOTO Q 9h's excellent QWERTY keyboard makes it ideal for heavy emailing. On the whole, this is a competent smart phone that's packaged in a nice design.
