Though a relatively cheap price point is sure to entice, several gaps in functionality make the GPSMAP 76 somewhat undesirable. It is functional if PC connectivity isn’t paramount, but for the most part it's worth paying more for the extra features.

The nuvi 250 is a solid unit and commands a lower price than the 250W, despite possessing the same features.

Although the eTrex H might suit those hikers who want nothing except the bare minimum, most will find it largely unusable. Inadequate functionality and no base map makes the unit extremely hard to use for anyone except the most experienced hikers, and the slightly more expensive Magellan Triton 200 is probably a better option.

Although the GPS 60 looks like it means business, it doesn’t live up to expectations. A USB connection and Garmin’s MapSource software are small consolation for the lack of mapping and slow signal acquisition. There are better — and cheaper — handheld GPS options.

Laser’s Navig8r M35 is one of the best value for money GPS units we've come across. Don’t let its low price fool you: it is packed with features, including detailed mapping data and Australian-accented text-to-speech.

The FD-250 has most of the basics and a few extra features that will serve you well, but the lack of responsiveness of the touch screen is an issue.

Costing the same as a low-end automotive GPS unit, the Triton 200 forgoes a touch screen as well as turn-by-turn and voice navigation in order to specialise in detailed mapping for outdoor activities. However, without the expandable memory required for detailed maps, the Triton 200 doesn’t provide the functionality necessary for more complex hiking and geocaching adventures.

The C220 is a solid choice if you're after an entry-level GPS unit. Excellent maps, speedy performance and a competitive price may be enough to overlook the sometimes confusing interface.

As an entry-level unit the Moov 300 is a solid GPS device and an ideal choice if you happen to be on a budget. It may lack the bells and whistles of its more expensive counterparts, but it nonetheless provides a reasonable navigational experience.
