The Sony DCR-SR85 is a good quality mid-range camcorder that easily matches any standard-def model in its price range. If you're determined to ignore the HD boom, you could certainly do a lot worse than this.

The Sony HDR-SR8E is a stylish and easy to use HDD camera with a gargantuan 100GB hard drive. It might not be the cheapest model out there, but you definitely get what you pay for.

As with the Sony HDR-CX7K, this is a solid product let down by the price of its recordable media. We'd therefore recommend it to people who already own a large collection of SD cards (or an even larger wallet).

While slightly overpriced for an entry-level HD camcorder, the HDR-SR10 offers a variety of innovative features for the asking price. Those with beefier wallets, however, would be better off with one of its deluxe stable mates.

The DCR-DVD810 is an impressive standard-def camcorder that combines three recording formats for the price of one. If you like the idea of instant DVDs, but also want the versatility of flash memory, look no further.

Despite being soundly beaten with the ugly stick, this is a quality piece of hardware capable of capturing beautiful high-def video. If you can get past the bulky design, you won't be disappointed.

JVC's Everio GZ-HD7 is a good, high-definition hard disk camcorder, however it is outperformed in several areas by competing models. For many users it will be perfectly adequate, but the high price tag and smattering of image quality issues mean there may be better purchases elsewhere.

JVC's Everio GZ-MG575 is a decent hard disk camera. It won't satisfy those looking for premium quality video footage, but the long list of features, relatively simple interface, and 40GB of storage go some way to making up for this.

A great all-round camera, the HG10 is streamlined towards delivering high quality video in ideal conditions. The lack of manual controls may frustrate advanced users, however most will find it to be an excellent camcorder.

The Xacti VPC-C5 is miles better than Sanyo's previous efforts and we won't be surprised when other manufacturers emulate the camera/camcorder hybrid formula. But remember, if you want a straightforward digicam, you'll find better elsewhere.

Despite offering an average video performance, this is a fairly solid hybrid device that we have little hesitation in recommending to casual users.

Despite being hampered by a weak optical zoom and questionable asking price, the GZ-MG275 is a solid HDD/SD camera that will satisfy all but the pickiest of users.
