The U1010 is about twice the size of a smart-phone, yet it's a fully-fledged Windows Vista-based tablet PC. It's suitable for professional users, or even regular travellers, who want a very mobile device with all the functionality of a typical computer. Unfortunately, it lacks built-in 3G features.

Excellent performance and powerful multimedia capabilities thanks to a Blu-ray drive and HDMI make the FZ18G an excellent desktop replacement.

Although there's a notable premium on the solid-state hard drive and ultra-portables don't often come cheap anyway, this is a good little buy. It's got enough power to handle the most basic tasks and its implementation of flash memory should please those wanting to be on the cutting edge.

Although the Toshiba Portege R500 is clearly not a power user's choice, its lightweight frame, small size and good battery life make it an excellent choice for simple tasks such as email, Web surfing and simple office applications while travelling for business.

The Dell XPS M1330 is the most powerful notebook we've tested to date. It's slim, it's stylish and for your money, it's even good value. There's little to complain about this notebook, except if you don't have one.

Although the HP Compaq 6710b is not at the top of the game, it's a good value for money option. The included software could have been a little more comprehensive, but this simple notebook still does what it needs to do reasonably well.

The Lenovo 3000 N200 may not excel in anything specific, but it offers a good mix of features for the home or the small business environment. The best asset of this notebook is its ability to unplug at the end of the work day and go home with you.

The Zepto look is stylish and has some power under the hood. It's a shame our model has now been superseded, but the features of this notebook are good and will soon carry across to the new Santa Rosa build. The only thing that we really didn't like about this notebook was the brightness of the screen and the less-rigid LCD panel.

While it's not at the top end of the latest Centrino Duo notebooks, it is a good performer and is well designed.

The new Dell Inspiron is a very nice choice if you're after a powerful and stylish notebook. We were impressed by just about every aspect of its performance and the new look gives it a touch of flare to boot.

There's little or nothing to complain about with this notebook. It's got power, long battery life and plenty of functionality.

With its ultra low voltage CPU the C1 Express Dual offers little in the way of power, but is extremely portable with some good hybrid notebook and tablet features.
