Broadband surpassed dial-up for the first time last year, with twice as many homes connected via broadband than via dial-up, according to recent figures released by the Australian Bureau of Statistics.

Two thirds of homes in the major cities have an internet connection of some kind. In regional areas, this figure is lower, at 42%.

The percentage of the total population with internet connections has soared in the last eight years to 2006-07, increasing from 16 to 64 percent.

Over three quarters of 15-24 year olds use the internet at home, whereas only 28% of those aged 65-74 do.
