Jargon Busters: Vacuum Cleaners

Airflow: A vacuum's performance is measured in litres per second of airflow. The greater the airflow, the more powerful the vacuum will be.

Barrel: This is a specific type of vacuum cleaner. It refers to squat, compact models that suck up dirt through a hose.

Dust collector: This is the bag inside a vacuum cleaner that collects excess dirt and dust. They can be either disposable or reusable, depending on the vacuum model.

Handheld: This is a specific type of vacuum cleaner. It refers to miniature, battery operated models that can be used with one hand.

HEPA: HEPA vacuums have more powerful motors and sophisticated filters which allow them to eradicate the air particles which cause allergies.

Power head: This is a motorised attachment for barrel vacuums that helps to suck up dirt and dust particles.

Stand-up: This is a specific type of vacuum cleaner. It refers to traditional upright models that suck dust into a bag attached to the vacuum's handle.

Turbo head: This is a brush attachment powered by a vacuum's airflow. Like a power head, it helps to suck up dirt and dust particles.
