The Star Ratings Explained

Here at the GoodGearGuide, we test all our products accurately and to the highest standards, so that our readers are as informed as possible. Our review process is designed to ensure that products are assessed equally across the board, as well as within their individual categories. The basic criteria used by our reviewers include,

  • Features
  • Performance
  • Design

Additionally, we have undertaken quantitative tests and benchmarking with certain products. The results of these tests can be found under the Specifications tab.

Finally, we rate each product using a five-star scale. The table below helps to explain our ratings.

5 Stars (Highly Recommended)

  • This product is a standout in its field and possesses a feature or features which completely differentiate it from competitors' offerings.
  • This product rates almost perfectly in terms of design, performance, features and value.
  • We are leaving the building to buy one right now.

4 Stars (Recommended)

  • This product has excellent features and performance.
  • This product is good value, and rates very highly compared to its competitors.
  • This product will satisfy user needs, lacks any serious flaws, and comes recommended.

3 Stars (Above Average)

  • This product's performance and features are above average.
  • This product rates well compared to its competitors.
  • This product will satisfy user needs but may suffer from a few minor flaws.

2.5 Stars (Average)

  • This product meets users' expectations in terms of design, performance, features and value.
  • This product works according to its design, and provides adequate features.
  • This product may have minor to significant flaws or may omit certain features.

2 Stars (Below Average)

  • This product has significant flaws, such as poorly implemented features, missing functionality, inferior design or substandard performance.
  • This product lacks any outstanding features compared to its rivals and may fail to satisfy user requirements.
  • This product may be too expensive for the functionality that it delivers.
  • We recommend other products over this one.

1 Star (Poor)

  • This product either failed to work as expected or performed very poorly in our tests.
  • This product has critical flaws. For example, poorly implemented features, missing functionality, inferior design or substandard performance. It fails to meet users. expectations.
  • In our opinion, prospective buyers should avoid purchasing this product.
