Lenovo ThinkPad T42

Lenovo (which has taken over the ThinkPad brand from IBM) has added an integrated fingerprint reader to select models of its flagship thin-and-light laptop, the ThinkPad T42. The sensor, embedded in the lower-right palm rest, requires that you slide ...

Lenovo ThinkPad R52

If you've been waiting for a ThinkPad R51 with improvements, you'll like the R52, a very similar black business laptop with a slightly faster processor. Lenovo (which bought IBM's PC business) has updated the processor, but not much else with the Thi...

HP Pavilion dv1000

The HP Pavilion Entertainment Notebook PC dv1000 lives up to its name. A standalone DVD player as well as a laptop, it plays movies or music CDs at the press of a button, without the need to boot into Windows. An optional remote lets you control the ...

HP Compaq Presario V2000

If you're considering a wide-screen laptop for travel, the Compaq Presario V2000 belongs at the top of your list. At just 2.41 kilograms (not including the AC adapter), this compact unit is easier to carry than many competing wide-screen notebooks.

HP Compaq Presario M2000

We wouldn't elect the HP Compaq Presario M2000 the laptop we'd most enjoy cramming into a carry-on bag, but this economical desktop replacement is lighter than it looks, and it performs solidly.

HP Compaq Business Notebook NC8230

If you yearn for a wide-screen notebook for business travel and don't mind that a 15.4" model tends to engulf your lap or airline tray table, the HP Compaq Business Notebook NC8230 could be your perfect travelling and boardroom companion. It's relati...

Acer Ferrari 4000

When I think of racing, I think of ear-bleeding engine noise and fiery multicar pileups. Maybe that's why I initially steered clear of the Acer Ferrari 4000 with its black-checkered lid and "EAARRRrrrrrooom!" startup sound. (Acer says you can turn th...

Lenovo ThinkPad X41

Lenovo's (formerly IBM's) 1.4 kilogram ThinkPad now has a fingerprint reader. The skinny rectangular slide sensor is embedded in the palm rest just beneath the mouse buttons. Biometric software walks you through the stages of enrolling the finger of ...

Fujitsu LifeBook P7010

With impressive battery life, an integrated multiformat DVD drive, and a modest weight of 1.5 kilograms, the Fujitsu LifeBook P7010 attains near-perfection in at least three important areas. It even includes a biometric fingerprint reader for extra s...

Dell Latitude X1

Aimed at inveterate business travellers, the 1.1-kilogram, silver Dell Latitude X1 is one of the lightest laptops around. Its no-frills ultraportability (there's no integrated optical drive, for example) struck me as seriously insubstantial at first-...

Dell Inspiron 700m

A wide-aspect screen and very good performance are highlights of Dell's 1.9kg Inspiron 700m laptop. The screen is small, measuring just 12.1" diagonally, but its wide-aspect ratio and dense native resolution of 1280 by 800 pixels let you see more of ...

A swivelling Webcam and an all-white carbon-fibre case highlight the ASUS W5A, an ultraportable laptop weighing just 1.8 kilograms (not including its power adapter). Vanilla-hued laptops are not my favourite, because of the smudge factor if nothing e...

Acer TravelMate 3000

The Acer TravelMate 3000 comes with two batteries, is small enough that you can pick it up with one hand and comes at a reasonable price. On the other hand, it lacks a built-in optical drive and the keyboard is uncomfortable.

HP Pavilion dv4000

One of these days I'm going to buy a laptop that's a lot more multimedia savvy than my four-year-old Dell Inspiron 2500. When I do, I will seriously consider a portable like the inexpensive HP Pavilion dv4000.

Dell Inspiron 6000

You can see more on the Dell Inspiron 6000's wide screen than on most other 15.4" displays, thanks to its WUXGA resolution of 1920 x 1200 pixels. In fact, you can work with higher-resolution photographs, more spreadsheet columns, and more tiled docum...

First impression on unpacking the Q702 test unit was the solid feel and clean, minimalist styling.

For work use, Microsoft Word and Excel programs pre-installed on the device are adequate for preparing short documents.

The Fujitsu LifeBook UH574 allowed for great mobility without being obnoxiously heavy or clunky. Its twelve hours of battery life did not disappoint.

Andrew Mitsi

The screen was particularly good. It is bright and visible from most angles, however heat is an issue, particularly around the Windows button on the front, and on the back where the battery housing is located.

Simon Harriott

My first impression after unboxing the Q702 is that it is a nice looking unit. Styling is somewhat minimalist but very effective. The tablet part, once detached, has a nice weight, and no buttons or switches are located in awkward or intrusive positions.
