The Lexmark C500n is the new baby in the company's family of networked color lasers. It's similar to the Lexmark C510n, C522n, and C524n models we've reviewed in the past, but it achieves a lower price of just $579.90 by using a Windows GDI-based driver that renders pages on your PC. This lets Lexmark economise with a less powerful processor, less memory, and no licensing fees for PCL and PostScript. However, it still has a two-line LCD as part of its well-designed control panel, which competitors don't yet offer at this price. Lexmark also supplies drivers for the Mac, and the printer works with Lexmark's free MarkVision Professional, a good tool for managing a network of printers.

Epson's all-in-one performs well as a scanner and photo printer, but falls short on quality for other general-purpose tasks.

This multi-function device (MFD) offers a fax, an automated document feeder, wireless networking, and many upgrade options, but print quality isn't tops.

The MagiColor 5440DL holds plenty of paper and prints good text, but it came up short on speed and image printing.

The Konica Minolta MagiColor 2500W is essentially the same as the [[prodid:343]] model we originally reviewed in March 2005 except that the price has plunged to $499--the lowest we've seen yet for a colour laser printer. The only major difference is that you can now add an external network adapter for $190, which brings the total cost up to the price of low-end colour lasers with built-in networking.

Photographers will love the MP960 for its film scanning and beautiful photo prints.
