LAN party survival guide

Don't know what a LAN party is? It's a room full of folks getting together to play games. Also, to check out each other's case mods. And occasionally to sleep. It can be a small garage party for an afternoon or a weekend-long marathon in some convent...

The Specs that matter (and the specs that don't)

It usually goes like this: An ad in the paper (or online) catches your eye. It lists a few product specs and claims some special features, but that's about it. Still, the price seems okay. May as well pull out the wallet now, right? Wrong!

Intel's Core 2 Extreme mobile chips: a new speed king

How do you define "Extreme"? How about as a high-velocity, quad-core processor packed into a mobile platform? That's what Intel announced this afternoon at the Intel Developers Forum. Heretofore known as Core 2 Extreme, the cat (or chips) are now off...

The episodic game guide

So many games ask you to shell out 50 or 60 bucks, and for what? Thirty or so hours of playtime? Great, but what if you don't want to spend a whole week in fantasy land? That's where episodic gaming comes in: smaller games selling for less and offere...

10 great free games

I'm all for celebrating slack on a weekly basis here at PC World, but there's something more tangible that I like just as much: free games.

Coming Soon: Wii Resort, Wii Music and Clone Wars

Showing off what the new advanced Wii MotionPlus attachment can do: Wii Sports Resort. The first activity Nintendo demonstrated: Disc Dog, chuck a Frisbee at the beach and watch your digital mutt run after it. Next was basically a tribute to the old ...

Sci-Fi channel has head in cloud (computing)

The buzzword: cloud computing. The technique harnesses servers' power to share the workload, run Web-based Google apps or combine CPUs for cancer research and countless other noble causes. Brace for one more use: games. The Sci Fi Network has just an...

Can Grand Theft Auto teach you Russian?

Olaf Kopetsch, who lives in Germany, always tries to get his hands on American video games and movies--partly because he wants to play the unedited versions of U.S. titles, but mostly because he wants to learn some slang. No, I'm serious. This practi...

Online gaming gets cheaper

The online gaming universe takes a page from Radiohead's book as big companies like EA tinker with "pay-what-you-want" gaming experiences.

PC Gaming's Turf War

PC gaming gets a bad rap. High-end game rigs cost thousands of dollars. Hardware and driver conflicts plague players. It's too much work just to have some fun. AMD agrees. So do Intel, Nvidia, Microsoft, Dell, Acer, Alienware, and a number of softwar...

HP OfficeJet Pro 8730

I've had a multifunction printer in the office going on 10 years now. It was a neat bit of kit back in the day -- print, copy, scan, fax -- when printing over WiFi felt a bit like magic. It’s seen better days though and an upgrade’s well overdue. This HP OfficeJet Pro 8730 looks like it ticks all the same boxes: print, copy, scan, and fax. (Really? Does anyone fax anything any more? I guess it's good to know the facility’s there, just in case.) Printing over WiFi is more-or- less standard these days.

Windows 10 / HP Spectre x360

Ultimately, I think the Windows 10 environment is excellent for me as it caters for so many different uses. The inclusion of the Xbox app is also great for when you need some downtime too!

Windows 10 / Lenovo Yoga 910

For me, the Xbox Play Anywhere is a great new feature as it allows you to play your current Xbox games with higher resolutions and better graphics without forking out extra cash for another copy. Although available titles are still scarce, but I’m sure it will grow in time.
