BlackBerry makes BBM secrecy functions free

BlackBerry is dropping additional charges for the retract and time-delay functions of its messaging app

With privacy and secrecy functions a given in competing messaging systems, BlackBerry is dropping the subscription fee for users of the 'retract' and 'timer' functions of its cross-platform BBM messaging app.

As BlackBerry's share of the smartphone market declined, it released versions of its BBM messaging app for iOS and Android to reach new users, but made some features available only as paid add-ons in a bid to shore up revenue.

With some of those features now found at the heart of competing messaging services -- such as Snapchat's focus on making picture messages expire after a certain time -- BlackBerry is now forced to drop the charges or see users switch.

BlackBerry will make the change in an update to the app Monday, removing the charge for Timed and Retracted Messages feature, previously US$0.99 or €0.99 per month. The feature allows BBM users to remove a message or picture they sent from the BBM app on other users' phones -- although it won't have any effect on screenshots recipients may have made of the incoming message. It also allows them to set a delay after which a message will automatically disappear.

Other functions will still be charged, including obtaining a custom PIN or user ID ($0.99), and removing ads from the app ($0.99). The company also offers a range of "sticker" packs for sending picture messages, priced $0.99 or $1.99.

BlackBerry isn't the only one charging for such add-ons. In late 2013, Snapchat began allowing recipients of its self-destructing messages to view them a second time, and last year began charging for additional replays.

The new version of BBM includes other changes beyond pricing, including the addition of a function to save pictures taken within the app to the device.

Other changes depend on the platform: The Android version, for example, includes muting of notifcations for group chats, viewing all pictures shared within a chat, and support for Marshmallow (Android 6.0.)

On iOS it is now possible to record and share larger videos, and to select multiple messages for simultaneous forwarding, retraction or deletion.

I've had a multifunction printer in the office going on 10 years now. It was a neat bit of kit back in the day -- print, copy, scan, fax -- when printing over WiFi felt a bit like magic. It’s seen better days though and an upgrade’s well overdue. This HP OfficeJet Pro 8730 looks like it ticks all the same boxes: print, copy, scan, and fax. (Really? Does anyone fax anything any more? I guess it's good to know the facility’s there, just in case.) Printing over WiFi is more-or- less standard these days.

Ultimately, I think the Windows 10 environment is excellent for me as it caters for so many different uses. The inclusion of the Xbox app is also great for when you need some downtime too!

For me, the Xbox Play Anywhere is a great new feature as it allows you to play your current Xbox games with higher resolutions and better graphics without forking out extra cash for another copy. Although available titles are still scarce, but I’m sure it will grow in time.
