Developers get access to more Sony camera features

The Camera Remote SDK allows access to settings such as touch autofocus and exposure

Developers will be able to build applications to remotely control two Sony lens cameras, using new features the company has added to an SDK.

The QX10 and QX100 lens cameras don't have bodies. The camera is instead integrated into what looks like a normal lens, with a smartphone serving as the viewfinder. The two communicate wirelessly with each other, which means users don't need to hold the camera to use it.

Using the Camera Remote API beta SDK (software development kit) any developer can build apps to control a number of different settings on the two products. A new version made available Wednesday includes access to touch autofocus, exposure mode and white balance on the QX10 and the QX100. Developers can also access shutter speed and F number settings on the QX100, according to Sony.

Features already supported include image capture, video recording, zoom and timer.

The SDK is also compatible with a number of other Sony cameras, but functionality is much more limited. The SDK can be downloaded from Sony's developer website.

To help developers get started, the SDK also includes a new iOS sample code project that shows how to implement device discovery, record videos and take pictures. The sample code for Android has been updated with an improved user interface and Sony has also improved the connection stability.

The QX10 and QX100 were launched in September at the IFA trade show in Berlin. The QX10 has an 18-megapixel sensor and costs about US$250. The QX100 has a 20-megapixel sensor and costs approximately US$500.

HP OfficeJet Pro 8730

I've had a multifunction printer in the office going on 10 years now. It was a neat bit of kit back in the day -- print, copy, scan, fax -- when printing over WiFi felt a bit like magic. It’s seen better days though and an upgrade’s well overdue. This HP OfficeJet Pro 8730 looks like it ticks all the same boxes: print, copy, scan, and fax. (Really? Does anyone fax anything any more? I guess it's good to know the facility’s there, just in case.) Printing over WiFi is more-or- less standard these days.

Ultimately, I think the Windows 10 environment is excellent for me as it caters for so many different uses. The inclusion of the Xbox app is also great for when you need some downtime too!

Windows 10 / Lenovo Yoga 910

For me, the Xbox Play Anywhere is a great new feature as it allows you to play your current Xbox games with higher resolutions and better graphics without forking out extra cash for another copy. Although available titles are still scarce, but I’m sure it will grow in time.
