Aldi's sub-$200 Bauhn tablet to go on sale in limited stock

The 9.7in Android tablet will have a limited production run.

German supermarket chain Aldi will sell a new Android tablet for less than $200. The 9.7in Bauhn tablet packs a quad-core CPU, high-resolution camera and a healthy range of ports; however, budding customers will have to hurry on the day of its release as stock is limited.

The Bauhn tablet will go on sale on Saturday, 22 February. It won’t be on sale for long as the tablet will only be offered “until sold out”. An Aldi Australia spokesperson confirmed the limited stock availability.

“Our technology Special Buy products are extremely popular. We encourage everyone to head down to their local Aldi store as early as possible on 22 February.”

The 9.7in Bauhn tablet has a resolution of 1024x768 and a pixel density of 132 pixels-per-inch. It packs a quad-core 1.4GHz CPU, 1GB of RAM and 16GB of internal storage. A microSD slot makes it possible to expand storage by an additional 32GB.

The Android 4.2 Jelly Bean tablet features a 5MP rear camera and a mini HDMI port enables the playback of videos on a television. To do so will require an adaptor; unfortunately representatives could not confirm if one is included.

Although the tablet features Wi-Fi and bluetooth, it is not compatible with 3G networks. This is a point of difference between the Bauhn tablet and the recently released 3G tablet by etailer Kogan, which is also priced at $199.

Aldi previously sold an 8in Bauhn tablet in December of last year. The company had forecast the $129 tablet would sell out on the first day of its release.

Check out the specifications for the 9.7in Bauh tablet, as provided by an Aldi Australia representative:

Why is the screen resolution always left out in such reviews, I think its one of the most important things and no one seem to care about it. Having a a high or low resolution case make the deal a bargain or just another sub $200 tablet on the market.

Hi Zed,

Aldi didn't answer us when we asked about the screen resolution, but we'll update this news piece if we do get a confirmation on that spec (or if we get a review unit -- this is not a review, by the way). The previous tablet had a resolution of 1024x768, but that was an 8in model, so not comparable.

Cheers

Tal,

According to an Aldi Australia rep, the tablet does not support dual-band Wi-Fi.

The representative was kind enough to pass on some additional specs. Check them out,

Cheers,

Have tried to download photos from DSLR camera to this Tablet, even with 32GB micro SD and internal 16GB it only manages to download 142 photos, then a message appears telling me the "storage space is running out", even thought I still have space available on internal memory and 29GB on the sad card. I can not manage to move photos on to SD card. I should be able to save 700 photos per 1GB.

Totally new to the tablet/android world, having said that i am reasonably PC literate. Having just bought one of these tablets i am a little confused. There is no file manager program i cant access either internal or external memory which means i cant copy paste install etc. The tablet is navigable via usb through my windows laptop which is fine for transfer of JPEGs etc and this sort of media shows up but as for apps i transferred while they are showing on tablet within windows on the actual tablet i cant see them WHAT GIVES am i missing something obvious? As for internet until i get to a wifi spot i cant do anything download wise..... Dazed and Confused...

Dan

14

Adrian - how did you even get your computer to recognise it?
I can't get mine to connect to pc even with USB debugging modes enabled etc.

Adrian

15

DAN...I just plugged it in and there it was, still its not much use so far. Think in my desperate search across the internet I saw something about a compatibility issue with Win7 re USB I am using vista having said that I cant connect via laptop wifi but I suspect that is to do with my wifi hardware, after tracking down a forum or 10 my wifi appears to not be able to support virtual routing... Still Dazed and Confused.... tomorrow i am going to try the hotline, wish me luck...

Been having a ball with the new 9.7 tablet from Aldi as my other Tablet i got from Aldi (the 10.1 inch i think?)died a sudden death at work when i threw my trashbag out into the bottomless dump master bin at work by mistake and i was heartbroken! this new 9..7 for 200bucks is perfect all round tabby and a strong build, always like all tech something else out there would maybe be a little better or worse out....or the old oh if i spend an extra 50 bucks it does that or this(or is it a name thing eh!?) i vote Bauhn 9.7 for 200buck and treat yourself to a very flash looking case with holder for tabby and a soft rubber feel button keypad for 25ish bucks.very very smick and i wanna strut it around :)

If its anything like the 8" tablet they released in December 2013, it will be laggy, freezing all the time, loop several times during startup, overheat and have very poor battery performance. Im offered one of these new 10" tablets to replace the 8" that dies within a few months after purchase. I will be back in 3 months time to comment about the 10" version.

Total rubbish. Not even acceptable as toy for the kids as battery (non swappable) life is very very poor. Last straw ... the screen now has a virtual hole & it's only been used a half dozen times. Not dropped/ abused/ subjected to moisture.
You have been warned.
Both Aldi & Tempo Australia are on notice. Stop selling us throw away rubbish !

LIFEBOOK UH574

The Fujitsu LifeBook UH574 allowed for great mobility without being obnoxiously heavy or clunky. Its twelve hours of battery life did not disappoint.

STYLISTIC Q702

The screen was particularly good. It is bright and visible from most angles, however heat is an issue, particularly around the Windows button on the front, and on the back where the battery housing is located.

STYLISTIC Q702

My first impression after unboxing the Q702 is that it is a nice looking unit. Styling is somewhat minimalist but very effective. The tablet part, once detached, has a nice weight, and no buttons or switches are located in awkward or intrusive positions.
