Optus has today announced the launch of a new mobile plan it describes as "entry level", claiming the plan will reduce the likelihood of bill shock.
The new $35 Optus My Plan is targeted at occasional users who don't make excessive calls, or use a large amount of mobile data.
The plan includes 200 call minutes, unlimited SMS and MMS messages and 200 MB of data per month.
The plan follows Optus' new charging model, which it announced back in June. Under the new model, customers have the option to change plans on a monthly basis if they exceed their data or voice allowance.
Optus also quotes voice inclusions by minutes rather than a traditional dollar value.
Optus Australia's CEO of consumer, Kevin Russell, said the company's research indicated that customers on entry level plans are more likely to exceed data and voice allowance, resulting in high bills.
"Some Australians live in fear of using their phone because of high bills and we recognise this needs to stop. Our research has revealed that over half of our customers on entry level plans are three times more likely to experience regular breakage than customers on higher included plans."
"We estimate that an average light user is hit with close to $100 in excess usages charges over 12 months. This is why we’ve introduced the Optus $35 My Plan so customers know exactly what they are getting while having the freedom and flexibility to do more if and when they need to."
Under Optus' $35 My Plan, users who exceed their data limit will pay an extra $5 for 300 MB of data, and while an extra $10 will provide another 250 minutes of voice calls.
At the start of the following month, Optus will automatically revert customers to the original $35 My Plan inclusions.
