Aldi's new budget 8in Android tablet has 3G, makes phone calls

Aldi to sell a 8in Android tablet with 3G capabilities for $169

German supermarket chain Aldi will sell an 8in Android tablet with 3G capabilities for $169 from Wednesday, 21 August, it has advertised.

The Bauhn HDC-08 Android tablet will be available through Aldi supermarkets from Wednesday, 21 August.
The Bauhn HDC-08 Android tablet will be available through Aldi supermarkets from Wednesday, 21 August.

The Bauhn-branded HDC-08 tablet is the fifth device of its kind that the supermarket chain has sold in Australia, and the third Android tablet it has stocked this year.

The device has an 8in display with a resolution of 1024x768, comes with 8GB of internal memory and has a 5-megapixel rear-facing camera. It runs the 4.1 "Jelly Bean" version of Google's Android operating system.

Other specifications include 1GB of RAM, a 1.2GHz dual core processor, a microSD card slot that allows users to expand the memory, and a built-in GPS chip. It also has a non-removable 3000mAh lithium polymer battery.

The tablet supports the 850MHz and 2100MHz 3G network bands in Australia so it's suited primarily for use on the Telstra network. Despite being a tablet, Aldi says the Bauhn HDC-08 can make voice calls and send SMS and MMS messages just like a regular smartphone.

Aldi has advertised both the Bauhn HDC-08 tablet as a "limited special buy" product and says stocks will vary between stores. The supermarket chain also says that the product may sell out on the first day due to "unexpected high demand."

"While stocks last - please note stocks are limited and will vary between stores. Despite our careful planning, we apologise if selected items may sell out on the first day due to unexpected high demand."

"In the event of unexpected high demand, ALDI Stores reserves the right to limit purchases to reasonable quantities."

Aldi refuses to reveal exact sales figures of its limited run products, but it is believed the supermarket completely exhausted Australian stocks of the original Bauhn tablet in days last year.

Bauhn and provides a one year warranty with the new Android tablet, while Aldi says it will refund or replace any product within 60 days, provided it obtains a proof of purchase.

Along with the 8in Bauhn tablet, Aldi has also advertised an accessory pack for the device. The "8in tablet accessories pack" ($19.99) includes a case with flip-out stand, headphones, a USB in-car charger, and a micro-USB cable.

I need to buy a tablet. I am not sure which OS to go to. I will also need to update my phone soon and I use a Palm Pre 2+ and my experience with WebOS has spoiled me as Apple and Google are poor implementations compared to the Palm. A cheap phone and tablet may help me make a final decision on a 2nd gen Nexus7 or iPad Mini. The phone is a bigger problem, Blackberry Z10 or a Lumina. My wife uses my dumped iPhone5!

Does anyone know if this tablet is only compatible with Telstra wifi as I am not with them and if I can't use it on any other provider then it will be useless to me???

Trevor

3

Looks like it should be usable on all networks Debbie, as all 3 Aussie network providers use the 2100 band for 3G. However, in some locations where the 3G is provided by Optus/Vodafone via 900Mhz, it might be problematic. Get it and see - Aldi have a 60 day return policy if you are not happy :)

I bought one 5 days ago. very good for the price. biggest problem is audio is not very loud and very hard to hear. it works on ALL networks in Australia. I use Vodafone and works well. the GPS works well. screen could be a bit more vivid but it's acceptable.

This has many features more expensive tablets don't have.

I CAN AND SHOULD BE UPDATED. GOOGLE HC 08 FOR UPDATE SITE AND FOLLOW DIRECTIONS.

I recently bought one and I must say, it's pretty alright for its price. My only problem is the preinstalled apps were messed up. I couldn't update my Facebook app nor delete it and it just bugs me. The whole 'Google services' kept giving me error messages. I was thinking of rooting to fix the problem but I'm not too familiar with the process. Does anyone experience this problem and have you resolved it? Thank you!

Download the update mentioned above it will fix all the above problems with updating gapps apps.
Only one thing is not clear in the instructions provided. When you get the little android man it says hold the power button and volume up button...nothing happens and you don't get into recovery mode.

What you must do is hold both then let go of the vol + button while still holding the power button.

Bought one and does not work. The tablet is not connecting with our modem and it makes me very sad.
I really like it, price is great, but now i have to buy the expensive one. Makes me very sad.

Why is it so difficult to upgrade the version of Android on this Aldi device? There is no choice for it under Settings... Android 4.3 has been out for quite a while and would be so much better to use on this tablet.

The app 'audio boost' works to jack the sound substantially. Tried about 8 other similar apps, they did not work...

I got one, took it back, and decided to get it again & live with the limitations for now. There is a gaping hole in good 8 inch android tablets, especially if you like the 4/3 screen ratio - which I'm a big fan of, especially for book reading! This is my perfect size for a portable/reader tablet (7 inch just too small) and sadly to get a great screen in this format it seems the new iPad mini is the only upcoming option...

Tony

31

In my experience they are no reliable. I bought one and stopped working after a few months. Sent it for repairs and got a new one because they couldn't repair it. This new one had also malfunction and I had to send it for repairs as well.
I wish I had spend my money on another brand even if it was more expensive.

32

Sorry I am not clear on what you mean by google hc 08 and follow instructions. I did that and to a non tech person the links mean nothing. just takes me to Code Warriors site for semi conductors like the rest The face book app has now stopped and wont let me go any further until I update but when I try it say can update the package isn't signed correctly delete original. Except you can't

Can you help?

Vic

33

Finally found the update all goes well untill the andriod bot laying on its back. Follow the instructions to reboot into recovery mode and after about 3 minutes it shows a quick flash of the recovery mode screen and then chinese characters after that back to system reset to start over

I have also loved mine too but it seems to have developed a problem with its micro usb charger socket and it isnt charging properly. it seems to start charging if I move the cable back and forth. this suggests its having trouble making contact. there is no lint in the socket that I can see, and have tried cleaning it out. the protruding flat connector in the middle of th3 socket seems to be a bit loose, it wiggles abit. has anyone else had the same problem?

How to call from iPad or Android tablet?

Change your tablet into a real phone. How to call from tablet? It's easy thanks to the Smartgroschen application. All you have to do is download and install our application from the App Store (if you have an iPad) or Google Play (if you have a device with an Android system).

Your tablet does not need a SIM card in order to be used like a telephone. It's enough to have access to a Wi-Fi connection and have the Smartgroschen application; you can then call landlines and mobiles around the world. See for yourself how simple it is!

Gil.

43

To use you tablet as a phone you have to completely turn the power of, not on stand by but POWER OF then insert you sim card (there is a diagram on the back of the tablet as to which way it goes). Power on again and your sim will be active. All the contacts on the sim will come up when you click on the little icon at the top of the screen.

Kay

I am happy with the tablet but I can not remove unwanted U-Tube items that keep arriving. I have managed to get them into the Trash but then can not remove them from Trash. Also would like to stop them coming in.

The screen was particularly good. It is bright and visible from most angles, however heat is an issue, particularly around the Windows button on the front, and on the back where the battery housing is located.

STYLISTIC Q702

My first impression after unboxing the Q702 is that it is a nice looking unit. Styling is somewhat minimalist but very effective. The tablet part, once detached, has a nice weight, and no buttons or switches are located in awkward or intrusive positions.
