Samsung brings three new LED monitors to Australia

27-inch Series 9 for professionals; 24- and 27-inch Series 7 for everyone else

Samsung has announced three new LED monitors for the Australian market, as part of its yearly product refresh. The new monitors are aimed at both high-end and casual computer users, with 24- and 27-inch sizes available over the three models.

Taking top honours is the 27-inch Series 9 (SB970). It’s a 2560x1440 pixel screen, using the Wide Quad HD standard that has 40 per cent more pixels than a regular 1080p Full HD display.

The same plane-line switching panel technology that we saw in the excellent Samsung Series 8 (SA850) and Asus PB278Q is here again in the SB970, so expect excellent viewing angles with almost no deterioration of colour or contrast.

The SB970 is factory-calibrated to ensure the best possible colour accuracy out of the box, but graphic designers, photographers and other power users will be glad to know that gamma, white balance and screen uniformity can all be adjusted using Samsung’s Natural Colour Expert menu on the monitor.

The most innovative of Samsung’s three new monitors is the Series 7 Touch (SC770). As the name implies, it’s a desktop computer monitor with an integrated touchscreen with ten-point multi-touch capability, designed to be used with a PC running Windows 8’s touchscreen-optimised interface. It has an HDMI port, which can also be used to connect a MHL mobile device like a smartphone or tablet.

The monitor’s 24-inch display sits close to its base, with a hinge that allows a 55-degree backwards tilt. This means it could be used on a high desk by someone standing upright — making it possible to put together a kitchen-bench touchscreen PC, for looking up recipes without needing a keyboard and mouse, for example. The SC770 has two 3-Watt speakers that should handle the odd YouTube video or Spotify track nicely, too.

Coming in at a more accessible price than the Series 9 monitor, Samsung’s new Series 7 (SC750) is a 27-inch, 1080p display with a mid-range WVA panel. Its key selling point is a relatively thin bezel around the screen, which should make it easy to put two monitors next to each other with only a thin gap between.

Samsung’s new Series 7 Touch monitors will be available from August, coming in at a $799 RRP, while the $469 Series 7 and $1,199 Series 9 are already on electronics retailers’ shelves.

I’d happily recommend this touchscreen laptop and Windows 10 as a great way to get serious work done at a desk or on the road.

Windows 10 / HP Spectre x360

Ultimately, I think the Windows 10 environment is excellent for me as it caters for so many different uses. The inclusion of the Xbox app is also great for when you need some downtime too!

Windows 10 / Lenovo Yoga 910

For me, the Xbox Play Anywhere is a great new feature as it allows you to play your current Xbox games with higher resolutions and better graphics without forking out extra cash for another copy. Although available titles are still scarce, but I’m sure it will grow in time.

For work use, Microsoft Word and Excel programs pre-installed on the device are adequate for preparing short documents.
