Smartphone owners who also have a tablet spend three times as much on apps as those who only own smartphones, according to a survey by research and consulting firm Analysys Mason.
The finding is an argument for wireless carriers and app developers to focus on tablets as a source of revenue, said Ronan de Renesse, an analyst at Analysys Mason, in a blog posted Monday and in an email to Computerworld.
The survey involved 2,000 consumers in the U.S. and parts of Europe.
When smartphone owners were asked how much on average per month they spend on apps for their smartphones, those who also had tablets spent more than 5 ($6.50 US) at a rate of nearly three times as often as those without tablets. For iPad and iPhone owners, the spending amounts were greater.
Users who own tablets typically have more disposable income than those who don't and are also more likely to own a high-end smartphone where app spending is higher and more common, Renesse said.
