BlackBerry has released the first major update to its BlackBerry 10 operating system for smartphones, less than two months after the company first unveiled it in Australia back in March.

The new BlackBerry 10.1 update is now available for Australian users to download on the BlackBerry Z10 smartphone. It offers a number of new features for the camera and the BlackBerry Hub interface, along with updates to notifications and cursor control.

The update brings support for PIN to PIN messages in BlackBerry Hub for direct communication between BlackBerry smartphones, along with improved attachment support in emails.

Other new features include the ability to customise notifications for seperate accounts including vibration and LED light notifications for individual contacts, fine cursor control which improves moving the on-screen cursor when editing text, and an HDR shooting mode for still camera images.

There's also landscape support for the calendar, easier international dialling and improved red eye reduction in the picture editor.

The BlackBerry Z10 smartphone launched in Australia in late March and is sold on contract plans through Telstra and Optus. It is also available though local retailers Harvey Norman, JB Hi-Fi and Fone Zone.

The BlackBerry 10 operating system uses a gesture-based interface, which is a complete departure from previous BlackBerry products.

To update your BlackBerry Z10 to BlackBerry 10.1, follow these instructions, as directed by Blackberry.

To update your BlackBerry Z10 smartphone to BlackBerry 10.1, look for the alert in the notifications section of the BlackBerry Hub. You can also check for software updates through the settings menu by visiting the software updates section.

The download will happen in the background, so your information remains safe. However, as always, we recommend you have a current backup of your BlackBerry Z10 smartphone readily available. For more information on how to update your BlackBerry Z10 smartphone, visit www.BlackBerry.com/update

LIFEBOOK UH574

The Fujitsu LifeBook UH574 allowed for great mobility without being obnoxiously heavy or clunky. Its twelve hours of battery life did not disappoint.

The screen was particularly good. It is bright and visible from most angles, however heat is an issue, particularly around the Windows button on the front, and on the back where the battery housing is located.

STYLISTIC Q702

My first impression after unboxing the Q702 is that it is a nice looking unit. Styling is somewhat minimalist but very effective. The tablet part, once detached, has a nice weight, and no buttons or switches are located in awkward or intrusive positions.
