Facebook Home hits 500,000 downloads but gets bad reviews

Users complain of Facebook Home flaws

Facebook's new Facebook Home app for Android has been downloaded at least 500,000 times but hasn't been received well.

The huge download count has been reached in the space of just a few days after Facebook Home launched on 18 April in the UK. This is despite the launcher only being available for just four smartphones - the HTC One X, HTC One X+, Samsung Galaxy S3 and Samsung Galaxy Note 2.

The Google Play Store doesn't give an exact download count but says the free app has reached the 500,000 to 1,000,000 bracket since launching. See also: HTC First review.

However, it's not all good news for Facebook Home since the app hasn't been all that well received by Android users. More than 11,000 users have written a review of the app on Google Play with the vast majority, nearly 6,000 at the time of writing, giving it just one star. On average, the app has a rating of 2.2 out of 5.

Many users have complained the app, which requires more permissions than most, drains battery life, uses too much data and removes valuable Android features like notifications. See also: How to get Facebook Home on your Android smartphone.

One user said: "It takes away the functionality that makes Android the best operating system to have. If you only use your phone for Facebook, you'll love it. But if you like using other apps or features without having to search for them, at least wait for the next Home update."

Facebook said it will update the app on a monthly basis so perhaps it can correct some of the flaws with the feedback posted on the Google Play Store. It will also become available for more devices, including the HTC One and Samsung Galaxy S4.

HP OfficeJet Pro 8730

A smarter way to print for busy small business owners, combining speedy printing with scanning and copying, making it easier to produce high quality documents and images at a touch of a button.

HP OfficeJet Pro 8730

I've had a multifunction printer in the office going on 10 years now. It was a neat bit of kit back in the day -- print, copy, scan, fax -- when printing over WiFi felt a bit like magic. It’s seen better days though and an upgrade’s well overdue. This HP OfficeJet Pro 8730 looks like it ticks all the same boxes: print, copy, scan, and fax. (Really? Does anyone fax anything any more? I guess it's good to know the facility’s there, just in case.) Printing over WiFi is more-or- less standard these days.

I’d happily recommend this touchscreen laptop and Windows 10 as a great way to get serious work done at a desk or on the road.

Windows 10 / HP Spectre x360

Ultimately, I think the Windows 10 environment is excellent for me as it caters for so many different uses. The inclusion of the Xbox app is also great for when you need some downtime too!

Windows 10 / Lenovo Yoga 910

For me, the Xbox Play Anywhere is a great new feature as it allows you to play your current Xbox games with higher resolutions and better graphics without forking out extra cash for another copy. Although available titles are still scarce, but I’m sure it will grow in time.
