EA’s SimCity has sold more than 1.1 million units sold in its first two weeks of availability.
Digital sales significantly contributed to this performance, with approximately 54 per cent of sales being of the digital versions of the game, either from EA’s own Origin service or others.
According to EA chief operating officer, Peter Moore, the sales number makes this the biggest SimCity launch of all time.
“SimCity had a great weekend with sales strong across both North America and Europe, adding to overwhelming demand at launch that has us tracking well beyond expectations for the game,” he said.
Moore goes on to call SimCity as “one of the storied brands in gaming” and that developer Maxis has “delivered a game re-envisioned and engineered for the online age.”
The “engineered for the online age” comment by Moore is debatable considering the widespread server issues SimCity has suffered following its launch, particularly in regions such as ANZ.
