Mozilla announces Keon and Peak Firefox OS smartphones

First developer preview Firefox OS smartphones detailed

Mozilla has shown off its first set of smartphones running its Firefox operating system.

The software firm has announced its Firefox OS developer preview smartphones will launch in February and made by Spanish vendor, Geeksphone. The two smartphones specially designed for the Firefox OS are called Keon and Peak.

Mozilla said: "we are working on bringing the power of the web to mobile, through Firefox OS, along with all the power of open standards and an open community, and once again, we'd like to invite web developers to join us."

The Keon model features a 1GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon S1 processor, 3.5in (320 x 480) screen, 4GB of storage and a 3Mp camera. Meanwhile, the Peak has a 1.2GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon S4 dual-core processor, 4.3in qHD IPS screen, 4GB of internal storage and an 8Mp camera.

Although the specs aren't exactly dazzling, Mozilla said it is working with multiple partners on a final phone to bring to the consumer market. No details are available about it yet though.

Firefox OS will have stiff competition in the smartphone market with Google's popular Android and, of course, Apple's iOS. Microsoft recently launched Windows Phone 8 and RIM will launch BlackBerry 10 in a matter of days.

The Firefox OS is built using open web standards and aims to bring HTML5 applications to smartphones with the help of developers.

"Using the same web technologies you are used to, you can make your app give alerts by vibrating the phone, take a picture with the camera or more. Play with it, experiment, try out your website, create an app." said Mozilla.

These Firefox OS smartphones have been developed in partnership with Telefonica. The firm owns O2 which suggests the UK mobile operator could be among the first to sell the devices to consumer.

I’d happily recommend this touchscreen laptop and Windows 10 as a great way to get serious work done at a desk or on the road.

Windows 10 / HP Spectre

Ultimately, I think the Windows 10 environment is excellent for me as it caters for so many different uses. The inclusion of the Xbox app is also great for when you need some downtime too!

Windows 10 / Lenovo Yoga

For me, the Xbox Play Anywhere is a great new feature as it allows you to play your current Xbox games with higher resolutions and better graphics without forking out extra cash for another copy. Although available titles are still scarce, but I’m sure it will grow in time.

For work use, Microsoft Word and Excel programs pre-installed on the device are adequate for preparing short documents.
