Canon launches EOS 6D entry-level full-frame DSLR

New 6D sits between old 5D Mark II, new 5D Mark III, 60D, and 7D

Canon has taken the wraps off its oft-rumoured EOS 6D -- a full-frame digital SLR aimed at budget buyers and first-time digital SLR owners.

According to Canon, the 6D is the world's smallest, lightest DSLR with a full-frame CMOS sensor. It's intended to "bridge the gap" for amateur and enthusiast photographers that want a full-frame sensor, but don't want to spend several thousand dollars on an EOS 5D Mark III or 1D X professional-level camera.

It's got a 20.2-megapixel sensor — in the 'full-frame' 35mm film-equivalent size, measuring 35.8mm x 23.9mm. It's a 14-bit sensor, and can shoot from ISO 100-25600 — although this can be expanded down to ISO 50 and up to ISO 51200 and ISO 102400. The viewfinder covers 97 per cent of the shooting frame.

The EOS 6D has an 11-point autofocus system, and a 63-zone metering sensor. It can shoot at a minimum shutter speed of 1/4000sec to a max of 30 seconds, with the shutter rated for a life of 100,000 actuations.

The 6D uses the same DiGIC 5+ image processor as the 5D Mark III and EOS 1D X. It's got a swathe of creative automatic and scene modes similar to the ones found on the more basic 650D and 60D crop-sensor DSLRs — this is intended to make the 6D easier to use for first-time users.

The 6D has a built-in Wi-Fi and GPS receiver, a first for any Canon DSLR. The Wi-Fi transmitter enables direct sharing to smartphones and other Canon Wi-Fi-enabled cameras and printers, as well as directly to various social media services when connected to the Internet through Wi-Fi. The GPS saves elevation, latitude, longitude and a time-stamp on the EXIF data of every photo.

The 6D will be sold either as a kit with a 24-105mm F4L lens, or as a stand-alone body. Canon hasn't set an RRP for the new EOS 6D DSLR — pricing is "set at dealer discretion". However, a Canon representative told PC World that the new camera would likely be priced "similarly" to the outgoing 5D Mark II, which at the time of publication sells for approximately $2350 on average.

The 6D will be available in both kit configurations in Australian camera stores from December onwards.

Ultimately, I think the Windows 10 environment is excellent for me as it caters for so many different uses. The inclusion of the Xbox app is also great for when you need some downtime too!

For me, the Xbox Play Anywhere is a great new feature as it allows you to play your current Xbox games with higher resolutions and better graphics without forking out extra cash for another copy. Although available titles are still scarce, but I’m sure it will grow in time.

For work use, Microsoft Word and Excel programs pre-installed on the device are adequate for preparing short documents.
