EXCLUSIVE: HP confirms “mainstream” tablet product

To be launched end of this year, beginning of next timeframe

Hewlett-Packard (HP) has confirmed that it will be launching a new “mainstream” tablet product towards the end of this year or start of 2013.

In an exclusive interview with ARN, HP printing and personal systems (PPS) Asia-Pacific senior vice-president, Dion Weisler, who is currently visiting Australia to meet channel partners, said the company will launch a commercial slate based on Windows 8.

He claimed it will have a traditional tablet-type form factor.

When questioned on its size and specifications, Weisler said, “Let’s not go too much into detail, but I think it’s fair to say that we will be playing in the mainstream.”

While he did not reveal details, Weisler did provide hints as to what could be expected.

He said, “I think you have got to have devices that spread across the axis according to the seriousness of the task. Our tablet is going to lend itself sort of mid-range on that axis.”

Weisler also suggested the possible launch of hybrid products with new innovations in form factors.

He said HP will boost both its commercial and consumer portfolio with the next range of products it is developing.
