HP's TouchPad: now $98 at Harvey Norman

Retailer Harvey Norman is selling HP's discontinued TouchPad tablet for just $98, in a bid to clear Australian stocks of the failed webOS device.

The Australian first reported this morning that the sale will start from 2pm today, with 16GB TouchPad units selling for $98, and 32GB models for $148.

The head of Harvey Norman's Computers' Division, Ben McIntosh, is quoted in The Australian as saying the units will be available in all Harvey Norman stores until sold out, and that all TouchPad accessories, including an inductive "Touchstone" charger (normally $89), will be sold at half price.

At the time of writing, Sydney Harvey Norman stores in Martin Place, Auburn and Bondi are already sold out of TouchPad units, with most stores across the country expected to sell their allocated stock in the coming hours.

HP originally announced that the TouchPad would sell for $599 (16GB) and $699 (32GB), before the company cut $100 off both models four days before the official launch in Australia on 15 August. It then sensationally abandoned the webOS line of products last week, consigning the TouchPad to the dustbin less than a week after it launched in Australia.

In the worldwide announcement, HP revealed it was "discontinuing operations for webOS devices", citing that they "have not met internal milestones and financial targets".

HP initially acquired the webOS software platform through the purchase of struggling Palm for US$1.2 billion in July 2010. The TouchPad tablet was one of the first of a suite of webOS products promised by the company, which included the Pre 3 and Veer smartphones that launched in the US, but never made it to Australia.

I’d happily recommend this touchscreen laptop and Windows 10 as a great way to get serious work done at a desk or on the road.

Windows 10 / HP Spectre

Ultimately, I think the Windows 10 environment is excellent for me as it caters for so many different uses. The inclusion of the Xbox app is also great for when you need some downtime too!

Windows 10 / Lenovo Yoga

For me, the Xbox Play Anywhere is a great new feature as it allows you to play your current Xbox games with higher resolutions and better graphics without forking out extra cash for another copy. Although available titles are still scarce, but I’m sure it will grow in time.

For work use, Microsoft Word and Excel programs pre-installed on the device are adequate for preparing short documents.
