Part one of 'A Lonely Place for Dying' proves to be a massive hit with downloaders.

The Cold-war spy thriller A Lonely Place for Dying has now recorded over one million official downloads on BitTorrent via the VODO distribution network. TorrentFreak reports that the movie, which was made with a $200,000 budget, has even surpassed Source Code and X-Men: First Class in popularity over the last two-week period.

The popular download is only part one of what will be a five-part serialised release. The makers hope that donations from downloaders will help them fund a theatrical release. VODO has previously helped promote and distribute the independent Australian film The Tunnel, a horror/thriller that was set in Sydney and shot with an estimated budget of $135,000.

Popular BitTorrent client uTorrent has also helped play a role in the distribution of these independent films as it offers users the chance to download featured films as part of the program's installation. uTorrent also allows you to install the VODO app, which provides an easy way to then download all of the service's independent BitTorrent releases.

You can find a full list of releases on VODO's Web site.

I think this is a brave and balsy experiment. I was completely unimpressed with Pioneer One, Zenith, The Tunnel, Four Eyed Monsters and most of VODO's offerings. They aren't professionally made. They are amateurs with no other options. Four Eyed Monsters is particularly awful. Pioneer One is a great idea but executed by extremely inexperienced filmmakers.

This is brave because it is an excellently made film. I loved it! And if we all got behind a film like this we'd be creating a new way for professional filmmakers to finance and profit from film. Work like this cannot be done for free. But most of the money in Hollywood movies is not kept by artists it is kept by bankers and lawyers. If we have a direct relationship with the artists then art will be extremely cheap and artists will still make a living.

The fact we are not fully supporting this is our failing. THis is a chance for us to change the world.

I agree. I suffered through Pioneer One. SUFFERED. I was like a man who had lost his faith but kept showing up to church hoping...PRAYING...that I'd see something to make the time spent worthwhile. The idea is sooooooo good. The filmmakers soooooooo suck.

Then I suffered through Tunnel. Dear GOD what a piece of crap.

I almost didn't download A Lonely Place for Dying. It looked wonderful but VODO had let me down so many times before. But I did download it. AND IT IS AWESOME! When people say it is a real movie that isn't saying enough. Its like they're saying it is professionally made and that is impressive. That is true. But it is so much better than most so-called professional films!

The writing is what gets me excited! It is sooooooo well written. The dialogue is so clever. It is so sharp. I get excited thinking about it. I haven't felt like this since I saw Pulp Fiction. The dialogue is simply marvelous.
