Trick or treat: Apple iPhone 5 coming in October?

Apple’s iPhone 5 has been the subject of scads of rumours, with some focused on a bigger screen, others on fewer buttons and still others on facial recognition. But the one thing all the rumourmongers seemed to agree on of late was that the next great smartphone would emerge in September.

Now, however, even that certainty has been thrown into question. A fresh report on Monday from the Wall Street Journal’s All Things D informs us that its sources say the iPhone 5 is coming in October: “Sources with knowledge of the situation say reports claiming AT&T has blacked out employee vacations during the last two weeks of September in preparation for the retail debut of the next iPhone are misinformed. ‘I don’t know why AT&T’s calling for all hands on deck those weeks, but it’s not for an iPhone launch,’ a source familiar with Apple’s plans said.”
The report set the iPhone blogosphere afire on Monday morning. TiPb wrote: “All Things D is usually well connected with sources familiar with Apple products; so this could be a very reliable snippet of information. The only concrete information we have so far is the release of iOS 5 in the fall. No new iPhone would be released until iOS 5 is ready to roll. Fall does not even start until September 23, which would make October a more likely month for iPhone 5 after all.”
Apple traditionally has introduced iPhones in June/July, but focused its Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC) this year on software, including iOS 5.
