iPhone 5 to feature edge-to-edge display, A5 processor?

The fifth generation of Apple's smartphone will feature a larger 4in edge-to-edge display, along with the same A5 processor used in the iPad 2

Apple's iPhone 5 is still months away from becoming a reality, but that hasn't stopped the rumour mill going into overdrive. The latest word is that the fifth generation of Apple's smartphone will feature a larger 4in edge-to-edge display, along with the same A5 processor used in the iPad 2.

According to 9 to 5 Mac, the iPhone 5 will feature an aluminium rear rather than the current glass backing of the iPhone 4. It says the iPhone 5 will retain most of the physical design of its predecessor with a similar shape and size.

One thing that is expected to change is the iPhone 5 display. It is tipped to be 4in in size, larger than the current 3.5in screen of the iPhone 4. It is also rumoured to be an edge-to-edge display, meaning the bezel surrounding the display will be much slimmer than the one on the current model. The iPhone 5 screen is likely to be similar to the current iPhone 4's retina display, which uses IPS technology and has a 640x960 pixel resolution.

A larger display will bring the iPhone in line with Google Android phones such as the 4.3in HTC Desire HD, and the 4in Samsung Galaxy S and Sony Ericsson XPERIA X10.

Other recent rumours about the iPhone 5 doing the rounds include the inclusion of a Near Field Communication (NFC) chip, and the presence of two SIM card slots. NFC is a short-range wireless communication technology; the same used in many new credit cards, whereby the card can be simply swiped across a smartchip to make a purchase.
