Yahoo Video dumping user content

Users have until March 14 to download videos before they vanish

Really like that video you posted on Yahoo Video? Well, if you want it back, you better hurry up and download it.

As of March 15, user videos will no longer be available on the Web site, which as of August was the third-largest video site in the United States. According to Internet tracker comScore, Yahoo came in behind first-place video giant YouTube and second-place Facebook.

However, things are changing at Yahoo Videos.

In December, the company announced on its site that users no longer allowed to upload videos. Now, users have until March 14 to download their videos. After that, they won't be available.

The company added download functionality to users' video profiles, under the My Video tab, to enable them to retrieve their content.

"General user upload functionality and user-generated content are being removed from Yahoo Video as focus shifts to our core businesses' future growth," the company noted on its site. "This was a difficult decision to make, but it's part of the ongoing prioritization efforts at Yahoo. We apologize if this causes you any inconvenience."

Yahoo Video isn't going away all together, though. The site will remain up, but it will only contain content from Yahoo and its partners. User-generated content will no longer be part of the site.

Dan Olds, an analyst with The Gabriel Consulting Group, said that the lack of a public outcry in response to the move shows why the company is switching things up.

"YouTube, like Google itself, has become ubiquitous on the Web," he added. "If someone needs to get their fix of cute kitten videos or guys doing something stupid that ends up wrong, YouTube is the first stop. I don't see this badly impacting many users."

HP OfficeJet Pro 8730

A smarter way to print for busy small business owners, combining speedy printing with scanning and copying, making it easier to produce high quality documents and images at a touch of a button.

HP OfficeJet Pro 8730

I've had a multifunction printer in the office going on 10 years now. It was a neat bit of kit back in the day -- print, copy, scan, fax -- when printing over WiFi felt a bit like magic. It’s seen better days though and an upgrade’s well overdue. This HP OfficeJet Pro 8730 looks like it ticks all the same boxes: print, copy, scan, and fax. (Really? Does anyone fax anything any more? I guess it's good to know the facility’s there, just in case.) Printing over WiFi is more-or- less standard these days.

Windows 10 / HP Spectre x360

Ultimately, I think the Windows 10 environment is excellent for me as it caters for so many different uses. The inclusion of the Xbox app is also great for when you need some downtime too!

Windows 10 / Lenovo Yoga 910

For me, the Xbox Play Anywhere is a great new feature as it allows you to play your current Xbox games with higher resolutions and better graphics without forking out extra cash for another copy. Although available titles are still scarce, but I’m sure it will grow in time.
