Google Maps on Android gets personalized recommendations

The Hotspot ratings widget allows people to share recommendations with friends

The latest version of Google Maps on Android comes with Hotspot, a new "local recommendation engine" that will help users discover places based on ratings from themselves and their friends, Google said in a blog post.

The goal with Hotspot is to make local search results for places on Google Maps more personal, relevant and trustworthy, the company said.

To access Hotspot on their smartphones, users will have to upgrade to version 4.7 of Google Maps for Android, which is available for download and is compatible with Android 1.6 or later. To make it as easy as possible for users to rate new places, Google has also developed a new rating widget, which users can install from the homescreen, that identifies the user's location and lists nearby places of interest.

Hotspot works with Google Places, which is a database of locations such as restaurants and bars that is integrated with Google Maps. Users can review those locations marked by Places within Hotspot, which can be accessed through a Web browser or the mobile widget.

HP OfficeJet Pro 8730

I've had a multifunction printer in the office going on 10 years now. It was a neat bit of kit back in the day -- print, copy, scan, fax -- when printing over WiFi felt a bit like magic. It’s seen better days though and an upgrade’s well overdue. This HP OfficeJet Pro 8730 looks like it ticks all the same boxes: print, copy, scan, and fax. (Really? Does anyone fax anything any more? I guess it's good to know the facility’s there, just in case.) Printing over WiFi is more-or- less standard these days.

Ultimately, I think the Windows 10 environment is excellent for me as it caters for so many different uses. The inclusion of the Xbox app is also great for when you need some downtime too!

Windows 10 / Lenovo Yoga 910

For me, the Xbox Play Anywhere is a great new feature as it allows you to play your current Xbox games with higher resolutions and better graphics without forking out extra cash for another copy. Although available titles are still scarce, but I’m sure it will grow in time.
