Taiwanese mobile phone manufacturer HTC announced yesterday that its hotly anticipated Desire HD smartphone, the successor to the HTC Desire, will be available from early November exclusively through VHA (Vodafone Hutchison Australia).

The HTC Desire HD builds on the original HTC Desire with a larger, 4.3in SLCD screen (up from its predecessor's 3.7in display), 720p HD video recording and an 8-megapixel camera with a dual LED flash. It is also one of the first Android smartphones to ship with the latest version of the Google Android OS, 2.2 or "Froyo", which adds full Flash support, built-in wireless tethering, and the ability to store third-party application on a microSD card.

The HTC Desire HD will be exclusive to Vodafone for the live of the device, and will be available for $0 upfront on Vodafone's $59 promo offer over 24 months. The promotional offer is Vodafone's $69 cap with a $10 discount; the plan includes $650 worth of calls, unlimited SMS and MMS, 2GB of data and unlimited Vodafone/3 to Vodafone/3 calls. Vodafone will not sell the Desire HD outright.

"The HTC Desire HD is one of the most highly anticipated Android smartphones this year, and will give customers an even simpler and more amazing experience," said Ross Parker, general manager for devices and pricing at Vodafone. "I've been using the Desire HD for a couple of months now and it is probably the best device I've ever used."

HTC has crafted the Desire HD from a single block of aluminium, similar to the HTC Legend, which is also sold exclusively through Vodafone in Australia.

The HTC Desire HD will be available from "early November" through both Vodafone and 3.
