Nine plans new GEM digital TV channel

New channel replaces Nine HD, will target women aged 35+

The Nine Network will launch a third free-to-air digital television channel called GEM, scheduled to begin broadcasting a day after Seven's launch of 7Mate.

Nine's GEM — an acronym for General Entertainment and Movies — follows the success of Nine's digital GO! channel. Unlike GO!, which can only be viewed in 576i standard definition, GEM will be broadcast in 1080i high definition.

The new channel will target a mainly female audience aged 35 and over. Nine’s new channel will televise several US TV shows including Friends, CSI and Cold Case, as well as the black comedy Weeds — which previously aired on the GO! channel. GEM will also screen 'homegrown' shows such as McLeod's Daughters and Sea Patrol, and will be the network’s go-to channel for high-definition sports broadcasting.

The Seven Network’s 7Mate channel, which debuts on 25 September — AFL Grand Final day — aims to target males aged 16-49.

Nine’s CEO David Gyngell said in a press release that GEM will also air news and current affairs programs like the original channel, although he noted that content would be re-packaged to suit the style of GEM.

"GEM is what its title suggests – a general entertainment and movie channel, carefully crafted and targeted like GO! before it, to appeal to a wide audience cross-section and complement Nine’s existing successful brands," Gyngell said.

GEM will replace Nine HD on channel 90. To view GEM, you need a high-definition digital TV, PVR or set top box.

We also have perfect picture & signal but no sound. We're in the Hunter region, has that got anything to do with it? We had a similar issue with One HD at first as it was rolled out to regional areas slightly later than metro areas. If that's what they're doing it sucks as one of my fav movies is on tonight.

Channel 90 is suppose to be GEM, but at present it is exactly the same as channel 9. - FOOTBALL, even though the advertised programmes are different.

I am not very happy with Gem as the show random acts of kindness that I like to watch was taken off on sunday at 7.30 pm. In future I will not be watching any channels where nine is concern.

Hi

Does anyone know the name of the music used in the promotion of GEM? (It plays during every ad break, so everyone must know the one I mean).

Thanks

Well,if you want irritating repetition on their programs then watch GEM when they have what could be an interesting show all the producers do is keep repeating themselves every few min like a show of 1 hour could be completed in 15 minutes,so much repetition of content it is just so stupid and irritating and poor quality production, sub standard,"c" grade or worse.and the digital signal continues to break up.overall poor quality shows with low grade production and presentation. So I will now watch some other channel.

please return friends and zoo on in the mornings, the ahhh bra ad is tantamount to mental torture, so is the other lengthy ads that no-one in their right mind would want to watch more than once, i love gem to bits.

Why is Joyce Meyer Ministries on at 4.30am; this woman is a FANTASTIC teacher and conveys the correct way to live based on the bible. She is a naturally impacting teacher with some humour at times and Australia needs her on prime time. She is a speaker at Hillsong this year and at a Brisbane church after that. Don't MISS her!!!!

Also, what happened this morning; she was replaced with a paid ad - disappointing
