Garmin GPS devices recalled due to battery overheating

Garmin has recalled approximately 1.25 million of its GPS devices due to a battery fault that causes overheating, which the company says may lead to potential "fire hazards".
The potential overheating issue affects the Garmin nuvi 200W, nuvi 250W, & 260W and 7xx units (where xx is a two-digit number) like the nuvi 760 models. The company says the third-party suppliers that manufactured the batteries used a specific printed circuit board design that is the leading cause of the problem.
No injuries or significant damages to property have been reported, with Garmin saying the recall is precaution as it has a "longstanding commitment to safety and customer satisfaction." According to Garmin, the number of affected units in Australia alone could be up to 22,000, with approximately 750 in New Zealand.
To determine if a unit is affected, customers can visit the product recall Web site. They will be asked to enter their nuvi’s serial number — if the unit has the specific PCB design and contains a battery from the affected date range, they will be given instructions on how to return the GPS at no charge and have it replaced.
