SBS to show all 2010 FIFA World Cup matches

SBS will also screen 3D matches on a dedicated channel

SBS has revealed it will broadcast full live free-to-air coverage of all matches during the 2010 FIFA World Cup. The move comes after a change to the Broadcasting Services Act, which initially had an anti-siphoning scheme preventing the broadcast of certain programs on secondary digital television channels.

SBS is now able to broadcast eight group stage matches live on SBS TWO, while other simultaneously played group stage matches are shown live on SBS ONE. Viewers without digital television will still be able to watch these games — they will be broadcast on the analog-accessible SBS ONE immediately after their live telecast on SBS TWO.

“The Rudd Government is a strong supporter of football in Australia and recognises that the FIFA World Cup tournaments are the pinnacle events for football on the world stage,” Minister for Broadband, Communications and the Digital Economy Senator Stephen Conroy said in a statement. “The Government is committed to rolling out digital TV to all Australians and the 2010 FIFA World Cup will help to encourage more people to make the switch.”

SBS recently announced it will be broadcasting some of the fixtures live in 3D on a dedicated channel. SBS made the decision after considering the effort required and subsequently receiving test broadcast clearance from ACMA.

Sony will be filming 25 matches in 3D, with SBS broadcasting all of them live. After each match, the game will be played on a loop on the temporary 3D channel until the next match to be filmed in 3D is broadcast.
