Blame the volcano!

Eyjafjalla volcano harvoc filters down to games industry

I spend most of my work day in front of a computer or a TV screen with a console hooked up to it, so I tend to forget how much real life events impact my job. Then a volcano erupted the week before Earth Day.

The April 14 eruption of a volcano on the Eyjafjalla glacier in Eyjafjallajokul, Iceland last week didn't immediately impact the video games industry (it's not like Eve Online developer CCP was in the path of a lava flow), however, by Friday we here at GamePro were made aware of its effects.

A thick cloud of airplane-exploding volcanic ash led to hundreds of grounded flights to and from Europe all weekend. Many flights are still delayed until later this week and beyond. The travel complications left our features editor Patrick Shaw here instead of in Europe for a super-secret game reveal; and now I'm told that Polish developer People Can Fly (ironic much?) is stranded in Europe so they're pushing back a Bulletstorm preview event that was scheduled for this Friday.

Bummer. The silver lining, though, is that we can all blame the dead period between the Game Developers Conference and E3 on the volcano this year.

I’d happily recommend this touchscreen laptop and Windows 10 as a great way to get serious work done at a desk or on the road.

Windows 10 / HP Spectre x360

Ultimately, I think the Windows 10 environment is excellent for me as it caters for so many different uses. The inclusion of the Xbox app is also great for when you need some downtime too!

Windows 10 / Lenovo Yoga 910

For me, the Xbox Play Anywhere is a great new feature as it allows you to play your current Xbox games with higher resolutions and better graphics without forking out extra cash for another copy. Although available titles are still scarce, but I’m sure it will grow in time.

For work use, Microsoft Word and Excel programs pre-installed on the device are adequate for preparing short documents.
